Superman and Lex Luthor will form a temporary alliance to face Brainiac in the film Man of Tomorrow, the next DC Universe feature film directed by James Gunn. The information was confirmed by sources close to the production and released this Friday (14). The villain, one of Man of Steel’s greatest classic enemies, will be the central antagonist of the sequel scheduled for July 2027.
The plot revolves around the threat posed by Brainiac, an alien being who collects knowledge and entire cities from planets. The gravity of the danger forces Superman (David Corenswet) and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) to work together, despite the historical rivalry between the characters. James Gunn had already indicated that the film would be as much about Lex as the hero.
New villain in cinema
Brainiac has never appeared as the main antagonist in live-action Superman films. His last relevant version in the comics shows the character as a green cyborg with superior intelligence. The choice reinforces the new DCU’s strategy of rescuing classic villains not yet explored on screen.
Alliance motivated by greater threat
James Gunn described the story as a conflict in which Lex Luthor must cooperate with Superman against something much bigger. The director statesor that the film explores the envy of Lex, who felt like the most important man in the world until the arrival of the Kryptonian. This dynamic should occupy a space similar to Superman’s own protagonism in the narrative.
Production details
Principal filming is scheduled to begin in April 2026. Theatrical release remains scheduled for July 9, 2027. Man of Tomorrow is the second film in the new DC Universe led by Gunn and Peter Safran.
Connections to the DC universe
The film is directly related to the second season of Pacificador, already in production. Characters introduced in the series must appear or be mentioned in the film. Brainiac’s presence opens up space to introduce elements like the bottled city of Kandor.
Fan expectations
The confirmation meets speculation that began in September, when Gunn published an image of an anatomical illustration of the brain. Fans pointed to Brainiac as the ideal villain to justify a union between hero and archenemy. The film promises a balance between cosmic action and Lex Luthor’s psychological development.
- Brainiac represents a threat that transcends personal disputes between Superman and Lex
- Villain collects entire civilizations, possibly including Metropolis
- Advanced artificial intelligence makes the character unpredictable even for Luthor
- Gunn highlights jealousyand as a central feature of the human antagonist played by Hoult
The production maintains a strict schedule within the DCU planning. Technical teams are already carrying out visual effects tests to recreate the villain’s characteristic look, which mixes organic and technological elements on a large scale.
