The Chrysalis spacecraft, the winning design of Project Hyperion, was planned to transport 2,400 people on a 400-year journey to Proxima Centauri b, in the Alpha Centauri system. Measuring 58 kilometers in length, the structure will function as a self-sustainable city, equipped with nuclear fusion reactors and agricultural systems. The objective is to colonize the exoplanet, considered promising due to its habitable zone. The Initiative for Interstellar Studies (i4is) led the challenge, which foresees the mission starting in 250 years.

The megastructure will have residential, industrial and agricultural sectors to guarantee autonomy for centuries. Social games and artistic activities were planned to maintain the psychological well-being of the crew. The concentric layered design will generate artificial gravity, reducing health risks.

  • Residential sectors will house up to 2,400 people with population control.
  • Agricultural modules will produce food for generations.
  • Nuclear fusion reactors will provide continuous power.
  • Life support systems will protect against cosmic radiation.

Chrysalis Innovative Structure

The Chrysalis spacecraft was designed with rotating layers that create artificial gravity, minimizing physical impacts on long journeys. This “Russian doll” configuration facilitates maintenance and repairs. The 58 km structure includes industrial areas for the production of tools and agricultural modules with hydroponic crops, as well as small artificial lakes forenvironmental balance.

Tech Challenges Ahead

The construction of Chrysalis faces significant obstacles, such as the development of controlled nuclear fusion, essential for the ship’s energy. Durable life support systems for centuries do not yet exist. Protecting the crew from cosmic radiation requires advanced shields capable of blocking accumulated cellular damage. Mental health protocols will also be crucial to avoid social crises. Simulations indicate that necessary technologies could emerge in 20 to 25 years. Robotics research will complement the project, with missions to map Proxima Centauri b before arrival.

Why Proxima Centauri b?

Proxima Centauri b, located 4.24 light years from Earth, is in its star’s habitable zone, with the potential for liquid water. Its proximity reduces travel time compared to other exoplanets. Studies indicate that the planet may have basic conditions to support life. Future robotic missions will investigate its surface. The Alp systemha Centauri is the ideal choice for the first attempt at interstellar colonization. Chrysalis will be a milestone in space exploration, integrating science and social planning.

Planning for generations

The 400-year journey requires strategies for multiple generations. Population control will ensure the balance of resources, while cultural and educational activities will maintain social cohesion. The ship was designed to operate as a closed society, with advanced recycling systems and self-sufficient production.

Psychological well-being in focus

Maintaining mental health in an isolated environment is a central challenge. Social games, arts and recreational spaces were included in the design to promote interaction and reduce tension.

Future of interstellar exploration

Chrysalis represents a bold step for humanity to colonize another star system. Although current technology does not allow for its construction, advances in nuclear fusion and radiation protection are expected in the coming decades. The project combines engineering, science and sociology to enable an unprecedented mission.
