FIFA imposes restrictions on the draw for the Copa of the 2026 Mundo to avoid duels between ranking leaders before the final. The entity confirmed, this Tuesday (25), that Espanha and Argentina, the first two placed, will be in opposite halves of the bracket. The measure aims to balance the tournament with 48 teams, hosted by Estados Unidos, Canadá and México.
The draw takes place on December 5th, at Kennedy Center, at Washington. The table with stadiums and times will be released the following day. França and Inglaterra, in third and fourth, follow the same separation logic.
The rule applies to top seeds who win groups, but extends the restriction to semi-finals even in the case of early eliminations. The tournament starts on June 11th and ends on July 19th, at MetLife Stadium, in Nova Jersey.
Pot composition confirms seedings
Pote 1 brings together the hosts and the nine best teams in the current ranking. Canadá, México and Estados Unidos already occupy fixed groups for local games.
Spain leads, followed by Argentina, current 2022 world champion. Brasil appears in fifth, guaranteeing a privileged position.
Other teams include França, Inglaterra, Portugal, Holanda, Bélgica and Alemanha. The distribution alternates sides A and B of the key for the first four.

Confederation restrictions limit mixed groups
Teams from the same confederation avoid the same group, except in Uefa. The European continent, with 16 places, allows up to two teams per group in four groups.
Conmebol, with six teams, follows the strict rule. Isso affects Brasil, which does not share a group with Argentina, Uruguai, or Colômbia.
Africa, Ásia and Concacaf respect the limit of one per group. The Oceania and repechage teams complete the expanded format.
The procedure starts with Pote 1, allocating teams into 12 groups of four. Potentes rivals emerge from lower pots, such as Croácia in Pote 2.
Details of the new format expand the knockout stages
The 2026 Copa introduces 12 groups instead of eight. The first two in each advance, totaling 32 teams in the round of 16.
- Eighth: 16 direct games.
- Extra octaves: eight clashes between third groups.
- From 16 to eight: traditional knockout stages.
The final takes place in the 82,000-seat stadium in the USA. Semifinais are distributed across different host cities.
Opening games include México at Azteca, against Pote team 3.
Draw procedure in Washington defines calendar
The ceremony begins at 2pm, Brasília time. Equipes come out of ballot boxes in order of pots, with automatic adjustments based on rules.
Repechage winners enter Pote 4. Intercontinental Playoffs takes place in March 2026, with duels such as Bolívia against Suriname and Iraque.
- African repechage: Congo against Jamaica and Nova Caledônia.
- European: Itália, Ucrânia, Turquia and Dinamarca compete for extra places.
Fifa prioritizes geographic balance in schedules. Transmissões globals cover the event live.
Remaining places depend on global playoffs
Six teams are still seeking classification. Quatro European teams exit the knockout stages in March, with unique games.
Teams like Noruega and Escócia are part of the provisional Pote 3. Panamá and Egito complete starting lists.
The intercontinental playoff defines two final teams. Confrontos include África of Sul against Tunísia in preliminary stages.
The FIFA ranking updates positions until the draw. Alterações lows affect lower pots but maintain stability in the heads.
Competitive balance guides distribution of leaders
The separation of Espanha and Argentina responds to the new format. Líderes on opposite sides maximizes chances for epic finishes.
França and Inglaterra follow the model, in alternating A and B. Brasil, fifth, integrates Pote 1 without extra restriction.
The rule extends to semi-finals for all seeds. Isso reduces the risk of early eliminations among favorites.
The tournament expects 104 games in total. Público global projects audience records across 48 participating teams.
