Trajectory of a football jewel
Romero started at Mallorca, where he became the youngest to play La Liga, at 15 years and eight months, in 2020.
Transferred to Lazio for 200 thousand euros, he played 21 games and scored one goal in two years. No Mundial Sub-20 from 2023 for Argentina, contributed two goals and one assist in four matches, despite being eliminated in the round of 16 for Nigéria.
He arrived at Milan free of charge in 2023, but saw just five games as a starter. Empréstimos to Alavés and Almería did not stand out, paving the way for the sale to Cruz Azul.
In México, Romero scored his first goal for the club on 31 January 2025 in a 3-2 victory over Tijuana. In August, he scored the only goal in the 1-0 victory over Toluca, consolidating himself as a key player.
Logistical challenges at Catar
Copa Intercontinental requires quick adaptation from teams. Flamengo, driven by Filipe Luís, arrives at Catar with less than 48 hours to spare after Brasileirão.
Cruz Azul, in turn, will compete in the semifinals of Apertura 2025 against Tigres on December 2nd and 5th, before traveling. Vicente Sánchez, interim coach following the departure of Martín Anselmi, manages the rotation to preserve the squad.
- 15-hour trip to Flamengo, with nine-hour jet lag.
- Cruz Azul faces two matches at Liga MX before boarding.
- Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, with a capacity of 40 thousand, hosts neutral duels.
- Prize of 50 million dollars for the champion, in addition to places in the expanded Mundial of Clubes.
The tournament, in an annual format since 2024, awards extra trophies to winners of Dérbi and Challenger Cup.
Mexican cast highlights
Cruz Azul has built a versatile team for 2025, with reinforcements like Romero and defender Gonzalo Piovi. The midfield features Carlos Rodríguez and Lorenzo Faravelli, authors of crucial assists in the Concacaf.
In attack, Ángel Sepúlveda and Gabriel Fernández share artillery, with Romero acting on the right. The defense, anchored by Jorge Sánchez and Omar Campos, conceded just seven goals in the Concacaf group stage.
The Mexican club, with nine Liga MX titles, is looking for its first global trophy since the 1972 Copa Interamericana.
Red-black preparation for the duel
Filipe Luís prioritizes ball possession training and quick transitions in his post-Libertadores reappearance. Pedro accelerates recovery from thigh injury, but his presence is uncertain for the 10th.
Flamengo, with eight international titles, sees Intercontinental as a chance to equal São Paulo in 12 cups. Danilo, hero of the South American final, stands out in the marking over Romero.
Bruno Henrique and Everton Ribeiro, experienced in world championships, guide young people as Lorran. The red and black fans organize caravans for Doha, anticipating a full house at Ahmad Bin Ali.
Numbers that define the confrontation
Flamengo finished Libertadores undefeated at home, with 12 wins in 14 games. Média of 2.5 goals per match reflects the lethal attack.
Cruz Azul, undefeated in Apertura until the semifinals, has an average of 1.8 goals scored. Romero participates in 20% of Mexican offensive actions.
- Flamengo: 4 Libertadores, 1 Mundial (1981).
- Cruz Azul: 1 Concacaf (2025), 9 Ligas MX.
- Direct confrontations: Nenhum official history.
- Referee: César Ramos, Mexican, whistles Dérbi.
These indicators point to balance, with the neutral factor favoring physical fitness.
Expectations for Dérbi of Américas
The confrontation unites continental traditions, with the Brasil seeking South American supremacy. México, runner-up to Concacaf in recent years, relies on Romero’s speed for counterattacks.
Fifa promotes the event as a global showcase, with broadcasts in more than 200 countries. Jogadores like Romero, eligible for México or Argentina, attract the attention of selections.
Cruz Azul, rising after the concacaf title, uses Intercontinental to test maturity. Flamengo, cradled by the tetra, aims at the global penta.
