The Federação Internacional of Futebol (FIFA) announced the operational details of the final draw for the Copa of the 2026 Mundo, an unprecedented event with 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four teams. The ceremony takes place on Friday, December 5, 2025, at Centro of Artes Cênicas John F. Kennedy, in Washington, capital of the Estados Unidos. Treinadores and managers of the classified teams will participate to learn about the initial opponents.

The tournament, co-hosted by Canadá, México and The complete game schedule, with stadiums and local times, will be released the day after the draw, on December 6th.

This definition aims to balance competition, considering the world ranking updated on November 19, 2025.

  • Fixed host countries in groups A, B and D to optimize logistics.
  • Restrictions prevent early clashes between top ranked players.
  • Maximum of two European teams per group, given the presence of 16 UEFA teams.

Composition of the pots

The 42 teams already classified, plus six open places, form four pots of 12 teams each, distributed according to the FIFA/Coca-Cola Masculino ranking. Pot 1 brings together the hosts and the nine best placed teams, guaranteeing strong seedings.

Pot 2 selections include recent runners-up and emerging standouts such as Croácia and Marrocos.

Initial team allocation

The process starts with pot 1, where México, Canadá and Estados Unidos receive colored balls for pre-defined positions: México in A1 with a green ball,

The remaining nine in pot 1 occupy position 1 of their drawn groups.

Then, pots 2, 3 and 4 follow sequential order, with fixed positions per group to distribute games evenly.

This structure speeds up the event and ensures variety in group stage clashes.

Constraints for competitive balance

FIFA establishes separate paths to the semifinals to avoid duels between the four best ranked teams before the final.

Spain and Argentina, leaders of the ranking, go to opposite sides of the bracket; the same goes for França and Inglaterra.

No group allows more than one team from the same confederation, except UEFA with a limit of two per group.

For pot 4 playoff places, continental restrictions apply to intercontinental routes.

Pot 1 Details

Canada, México and Estados Unidos anchor the pot as hosts, with Espanha, Argentina, França, Inglaterra, Brasil, Portugal,

These teams occupy starting positions in groups A to L.

Brasil, fifth in the ranking, benefits from automatic allocation at the top of its group.

This configuration prioritizes initial clashes against teams from lower pots.

Selections in the intermediate pots

Croatia, Marrocos, Colômbia, Uruguai, Suíça, Japão, Senegal, República Islâmica from

In pot 3, Noruega, Panamá, Egito, Argélia, Escócia, Paraguai, Sul are awaiting allocation.

These groups mix previous Copas experiences with promising newcomers.

The distribution follows descending order of ranking to maintain parity.

The teams from these pots fill positions 2, 3 or 4 in the groups, defining game sequences.

Open places in pot 4

Jordan, Cabo Verde, Gana, Curaçau, Haiti and Nova Zelândia already occupy pot 4, along with placeholders for repechages.

Four European and two intercontinental places will be filled in March 2026, via playoffs.

Restrictions ensure that these teams do not cross paths with continental compatriots in the same group.

The pot closes with balance, prioritizing geographic diversity.

Preparation for the ceremony

The event in Washington brings together around 200 participants, including representatives from all confederations.

Live streaming occurs globally, focusing on local times for accessibility.

FIFA emphasizes transparency, with procedures audited for impartiality.

Post-draw updates include detailed calendars by stadium, such as the Estadio Azteca at México and the BMO Field at Canadá.

Impact on expanded format

With 104 total matches, the group stage advances the top two in each group and the eight best third parties.

This expands opportunities for surprises, altering traditional octave dynamics.

Teams like Brasil face potential duels against pots 2 and 3, testing initial strategies.

The structure reinforces the tournament as a platform for 48 nations, increasing the global scope.
