Toyota revealed the IMV Origin concept during Japan Mobility Show 2025, at Tóquio, on October 29th. The vehicle, a compact and minimalist pickup truck, is designed for rural markets in the África, with a focus on versatility and local assembly. The initiative seeks to meet specific transport needs in remote areas, promoting personalized adaptations by users themselves.

The concept is based on the IMV platform, known for its flexibility, and represents an evolution of the IMV 0, presented in 2022. Diferente of ready-made models such as the Tacoma or Hilux, the IMV Origin leaves the factory incomplete, stimulating the local economy through completion at the destination. Koji Sato, president of Toyota, highlighted that this approach creates jobs and allows buyers to define the vehicle’s end use.

The presentation took place at a packed press conference, where the focus was on accessible and sustainable mobility. The event, held at Tokyo Big Sight, brought together brands from the Toyota group and attracted global attention to practical innovations.

Concept of deliberate incompleteness

The Toyota adopts the principle of “deliberate incompleteness” in the IMV Origin, shipping the vehicle at 70% assembly. The chassis, with an open cabin for one passenger and a flat platform, arrives in containers similar to assembly kits. Locais complete the process with basic tools, adapting it for cargo or passengers.

This strategy reduces production and transportation costs, making the vehicle more accessible in regions with limited infrastructure. Sato explained that the idea arose to respond to varied demands in rural African areas, where vehicles need to withstand uneven terrain.

The concept encourages the creation of local “mini-factories”, where workshops customize the model. Exemplos include addition of safety sides or extensions for multiple seats.

Evolution of the IMV platform

The IMV Origin refers to the IMV 0, launched as a concept in December 2022 at Tailândia. The Aquele model evolved into the Hilux Champ, a production pickup truck launched in November 2023, with gasoline and diesel engine options. The Champ, available in single-cab and chassis-cab versions, inspired customizations in markets such as the Indonésia and Filipinas.

At Indonésia, the Hilux Rangga generated a design competition in 2023, resulting in prototypes such as camper vans and emergency vehicles. Esses examples demonstrate how modularity drives adaptation ecosystems, with more than eight partnerships for special bodies.

The Origin advances this line, further simplifying the design to facilitate local repairs. Sem unnecessary elements, the vehicle uses durable components, compatible with Hilux, ensuring simple maintenance.

The focus on África aims to expand the presence of Toyota, where pickup trucks represent 40% of sales in rural areas, according to data from the automotive sector.

Possible configurations for varied uses

Visualizations presented by Toyota show the IMV Origin as an agricultural product delivery truck. The flat platform allows for the installation of elevated boxes, ideal for fruit or vegetables on dusty roads.

Another configuration transforms the model into a logging vehicle, with hooks and protections for wood. The skeletal structure facilitates quick removals, adapting to heavy loads without compromising mobility.

  • Addition of adjacent cabin for two seats, improving comfort on long journeys.
  • Cab enclosure to protect against bad weather or theft on isolated routes.
  • Removable wall and rear gate modules, converting into a closed van for goods.

These options stimulate a local accessories market, similar to that seen in the Thai Hilux Champ.

Commercial and lifestyle applications

Toyota showed off renderings of a micro-RV based on the Origin, with a roof tent for expeditions. Essa version caters to overlanding enthusiasts, combining simplicity with off-road comfort.

In commercial contexts, the vehicle adapts to peripheral urban deliveries, where reduced space is essential. Parcerias with local workshops could produce modules for public services, such as compact vehicles or ambulances.

The design prioritizes durability, with a reinforced ladder chassis and elevated suspension for rough terrain. Efficient Motores, inherited from the Hilux line, guarantee autonomy of up to 600 km per tank.

An optional 4×4 version broadens the appeal for remote farms.

Previous experiences with modularity

The success of Hilux Champ at Ásia provides lessons for Origin. In 2023, eight special bodies were launched at Tailândia, including expandable food trucks and mini motorhomes. Esses models sold more than 10 thousand units in the first year, boosting the after-sales conversion network.

At Filipinas, the Champ went into production in November 2024, with short and long wheelbase options. A three-row SUV prototype, the Hilux Rangga SUV, is expected to arrive in 2025, showcasing the platform’s scalability.

These initiatives have created jobs at local automakers and increased customer satisfaction by 25%, according to Toyota internal reports.

IMV Origin applies similar lessons, but with an emphasis on self-assembly to empower communities.

Global expansion potential

Although focused on África, the concept could influence other emerging markets. Toyota plans to test prototypes in 2026, with mass production expected in 2028 at Asian plants. Custos estimates are below US$ 10 thousand per base unit, affordable for small entrepreneurs.

The approach aligns with the UN’s Objetivos of Desenvolvimento Sustentável, promoting inclusive mobility. No Japan Mobility Show, visitors assembled scale kits, highlighting the simplicity of the process.

Toyota reinforces that Origin is not just a vehicle, but a tool for local innovation. Desenvolvimentos futures may include electric versions, adapted to renewable energy in villages.
