BYD has officially launched the updated versions of its plug-in hybrid sedans, the Qin L DM-i and the Qin Plus DM-i, on the Chinese market. The new models arrive equipped with the fifth generation of the manufacturer’s DM technology (Dual Mode), promising unprecedented energy efficiency and autonomy that redefines the standards of the segment. The main highlight is the ability to travel up to 210 kilometers in pure electric mode, according to the Chinese CLTC cycle.
The vehicles, which have already started to arrive at dealerships in the Chinese market, represent a significant advance compared to previous generations. The upgrade reinforces BYD’s dominant position in the competitive new energy vehicle (NEV) market, focusing on meeting the growing demand for cars that combine low operating costs and great range for everyday use, eliminating so-called “range anxiety.”
In addition to the improved engine, the models received specific updates to the design and onboard technology. The introduction of this new line seeks to consolidate the brand’s leadership, offering consumers a robust option for emission-free urban travel and, at the same time, the flexibility of a combustion engine for longer trips, with a combined range that can exceed 2,000 kilometers.
Details of the new fifth generation DM-i technology
The heart of the new Qin L and Qin Plus is the fifth generation of BYD’s DM-i hybrid system, which represents a milestone in efficiency. The platform was developed to optimize fuel consumption to extremely low levels, recording an average of just 2.9 liters for every 100 kilometers driven in hybrid mode with the battery discharged. Esse advancement was made possible thanks to a 1.5 liter aspirated combustion engine, designed specifically for the system, which achieved a record thermal efficiency of 46.06%, one of the highest in the world for a mass production engine. The technology intelligently integrates electric and combustion engines, ensuring that the vehicle operates in the most efficient way possible, whether prioritizing electricity at low speeds or using combined force for stronger accelerations, always with smooth transitions that are imperceptible to the driver. The system architecture has been refined to reduce power losses and improve battery and engine thermal management, maximizing every drop of fuel and every watt of electricity.
The evolution of autonomy and comparison with previous models
The leap in autonomy is one of the most relevant points of this update. Previous generations of the Qin Plus offered an electric range that varied between 55 km and 120 km, depending on the version. The new models practically double this capacity in top-of-the-line configurations, an improvement that transforms the daily use experience. Essa evolution allows most drivers to carry out their daily journeys, such as going to and from work, using exclusively electric mode, without the need for frequent recharging during the day. The need to activate the combustion engine is restricted to longer trips, which drastically reduces fuel costs and pollutant emissions in the urban environment.
BYD offers the new sedans with two options of Bateria Blade, its proprietary technology that is known for safety and durability. The capacities are 10.08 kWh, which provides an electric range of 80 km (CLTC), and 15.87 kWh, responsible for reaching 120 km in the Qin Plus and the impressive 210 km in the Qin L. The strategy ensures that even the entry-level versions already offer a higher electric range than many competitors.
Technical specifications of the new models
The powertrain of the new Qin L and Qin Plus consists of a 1.5 liter aspirated engine that generates 74 kW of power (around 100 horsepower) and 126 Nm of torque. Este propeller works in conjunction with an electric motor, which also has two power options, suitable for different consumer profiles.
The first electric motor option delivers 120 kW (163 hp), while a more powerful version is available with 160 kW (217 hp). The combination guarantees agile performance for urban and highway use, with smooth accelerations and quick responses to the driver’s command, making driving both efficient and pleasurable.
In terms of dimensions, the Qin L is slightly larger, measuring 4,830 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width, 1,495 mm in height and with a wheelbase of 2,790 mm. The Qin Plus is a little more compact, measuring 4,765 mm long and with a wheelbase of 2,718 mm. Ambos models use an independent suspension system at the rear, which contributes to greater comfort and stability when driving.
Innovations in design and interior finishing
Visually, the models follow BYD’s “Dragon Face” design language, but with updates that give it a more modern and sophisticated appearance. The front features a wider grille and sharper LED headlights, creating a strong and recognizable visual identity.
At the rear, the highlight is the interconnected lanterns, a visual signature of the brand that has been refined for a three-dimensional effect, giving elegance to the whole. The body lines have been optimized to improve aerodynamics, contributing to energy efficiency.
Internally, the finish has been improved with better quality materials and a cleaner, more minimalist design. The dashboard is dominated by a rotating central screen for the infotainment system, which can be 12.8 or 15.6 inches, depending on the version.
Occupant comfort was improved with ergonomically designed seats and features such as induction cell phone charger, high-fidelity sound system and sunroof, present in the most equipped versions. The 8.8-inch digital instrument panel completes the technological environment.
Connectivity and driver assistance systems
Both models come equipped with the DiLink 6.0 intelligent connectivity system, which offers a more fluid interface and integration with smartphones. The system allows advanced voice commands and access to a wide range of applications, transforming the car into an extension of the user’s digital environment.
In terms of safety, the top versions have the DiPilot driving assistance package, which includes features such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistant, autonomous emergency braking and automated parking. Essas technologies increase safety and comfort, especially in heavy traffic and long journeys.
Market positioning and pricing
BYD’s strategy with the new Qin L and Qin Plus is aggressive, with highly competitive prices in the Chinese market. Prices start at 99,800 yuan (approximately R$75,000 in direct conversion) for the Qin L and 79,800 yuan for the Qin Plus, making long-range plug-in hybrid technology accessible to a larger share of the market. Este price positioning puts strong pressure on competitors, both combustion and electric vehicles, and reinforces BYD’s mission to accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility.
