The Toyota is preparing one of the most significant updates for its successful SUV, the Corolla Cross. The next generation of the model, scheduled for launch in the coming years, promises to redefine the segment by introducing a powerful high-performance plug-in hybrid (PHEV) engine and the long-awaited GR-Sport sports version, combining energy efficiency with superior performance.

The new features elevate the sport utility vehicle to a new level of competitiveness, aiming to meet the growing demand for more powerful and, at the same time, more sustainable vehicles. The Japanese automaker’s strategy involves expanding the portfolio of a model that is already among the best-selling in the category, offering options that range from efficient use in urban environments to more dynamic and engaging driving.

Production of the new model is confirmed for the Sorocaba industrial complex, in São Paulo, the result of important investments aimed at modernizing the plant. Essa decision reinforces Toyota’s commitment to local production and the strategic importance of the region for the distribution of vehicles throughout América Latina, consolidating its position on the global automotive scene.

High-performance plug-in hybrid powertrain

The highlight of the new generation of the Toyota Corolla Cross will, without a doubt, be the plug-in hybrid system (PHEV) that will deliver a combined power of 223 horsepower. Essa configuration represents a notable leap in performance compared to current hybrid versions, providing more vigorous acceleration and more agile responses to driver commands. The system was designed to achieve an ideal balance between performance and efficiency, using a larger capacity combustion engine combined with more powerful electric motors and a larger capacity battery. The introduction of this technology not only raises the SUV’s performance level, but also aligns it with global electrification trends, offering a robust alternative for consumers who want the flexibility of a hybrid with the ability to travel significant distances in pure electric mode, drastically reducing fuel consumption and pollutant emissions in everyday use. Toyota is betting that this engine will be a key differentiator in attracting a new profile of customers looking for cutting-edge technology and a superior driving experience.

Autonomy and efficiency for daily use

With the new, higher capacity battery, the Corolla Cross PHEV will have a range of up to 70 kilometers in all-electric mode, a significant number that allows it to cover most daily urban routes without the need to activate the combustion engine. Essa characteristic, combined with the advantage of being able to be recharged at home or in public stations, makes the SUV an extremely economical and sustainable option for everyday life, optimizing travel costs and minimizing environmental impact.

The recharging process was designed to be practical and quick. Utilizando a 220V socket, it will be possible to charge the battery up to 80% in approximately two and a half hours. In relation to mixed consumption, the expectation is that, when operating in hybrid mode, the model will achieve averages of up to 16 km/l, a competitive value for a 223 hp vehicle, maintaining the tradition of efficiency of the Corolla line and offering excellent value for money on longer trips.

Renewed and more aggressive design

The Corolla Cross update will not be limited to mechanics. The exterior design will be completely redesigned to give the SUV a more modern and imposing appearance, in line with the brand’s most recent visual identity in its global launches.

The front will be the focus of the changes, with the adoption of new LED headlights with a sharper shape and a striking visual signature, which will reinforce the sophistication of the optical package and guarantee greater visibility and safety during night driving.

The front grille will also be redesigned, gaining a more robust shape and details that strengthen the feeling of sportiness. Essa change contributes to a stronger presence on the road, clearly differentiating the new generation from the current model.

The general lines of the body will follow an evolution of the current model, but with more pronounced creases and a more dynamic profile. Essas modifications are not only aesthetic, but also aim to improve the vehicle’s aerodynamics, resulting in greater stability and efficiency.

Enhanced technology interior

The Corolla Cross cabin will undergo a major technological evolution, with a total focus on connectivity and user experience. The instrument panel will be replaced by a fully digital and configurable 12.3-inch screen, which will display driving, navigation and hybrid system information in a clear and intuitive way.

In the center of the panel, a new multimedia center with a 10-inch screen will stand out. The system will be compatible with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, offering more fluid and practical integration with smartphones, allowing access to applications and features securely.

Comfort on board will be increased with the inclusion of a 15W induction cell phone charger, more powerful and faster than current systems, ensuring that passengers’ devices are always battery-powered. The interior finish will also receive improvements, with the use of higher quality materials and new covering options for seats and panels, increasing the perception of comfort and refinement inside the cabin.

The debut of the GR-Sport version

In response to requests from brand enthusiasts, Toyota will finally launch the GR-Sport version for the Corolla Cross. Desenvolvida by the Gazoo Racing sports division, this configuration will bring a different visual and dynamic appeal. The design will feature exclusive bumpers, a honeycomb grille, 18-inch alloy wheels with a sporty design and GR emblems spread across the body.

The improvements will not just be aesthetic. The GR-Sport version will have a recalibrated suspension, lowered by 10 mm, with firmer springs and shock absorbers. Essa modification aims to provide more precise and stable handling, reducing body roll when cornering and offering a more direct steering response, for a more engaging driving experience.

National production and investments

The confirmation of the production of the new generation of the SUV at the Sorocaba (SP) factory is strategic news for the operation of Toyota in the country. The investment in the manufacturing unit not only prepares the assembly line for the new platform and the more complex technologies of the PHEV system, but also strengthens the role of Brasil as a production and export hub for other América Latina markets.

This initiative generates jobs and promotes the local supply chain, demonstrating the automaker’s confidence in the potential of the Brazilian market and its ability to produce vehicles with advanced technology to meet an increasingly demanding demand for innovation and sustainability in the automotive sector.

Expectations for the market

The Toyota Corolla Cross is already an established leader in its segment, and the arrival of the new generation has the potential to further expand this advantage. The introduction of the PHEV engine attacks a niche market that seeks more performance and the possibility of running in electric mode, competing directly with models from Chinese and premium brands. Já the GR-Sport version fills a gap in the portfolio, attracting an audience that values sportiness without giving up the practicality of an SUV. With these additions, the Toyota demonstrates an aggressive strategy to keep the Corolla Cross relevant and desired, adapting to new consumer demands and electrification and performance trends in the automotive sector.
