Influencer Isabel Veloso, who tragically passed away at 19 on Saturday, May 10, 2024, revealed a profound desire to expand her family shortly before her death. Despite battling terminal cancer, she openly shared with CNN her hopes of having more children with her 26-year-old husband, Lucas Borbas.

This poignant aspiration was articulated as Veloso navigated her challenging health journey and embraced early motherhood. She conveyed a longing for one or two more children, underscoring her commitment to family life and the future she envisioned amidst severe medical challenges.

However, Veloso clarified her immediate focus remained on her first child, Arthur, born in December 2023. Her dedication to Arthur’s well-being was a primary consideration, influencing her perspective on further pregnancies given her fragile medical status.

Maternal aspirations amid severe illness

“I want to see my firstborn grow up, and if by any chance I was doing really well with my treatment, if I could take a break from treatment without any risk, I would have a second child,” Veloso stated in her interview, articulating a dream deeply rooted in her maternal instincts and longing for a larger family. This was significantly complicated by her health and terminal diagnosis. She candidly recognized these challenges, adding, “But, I think right now, it’s quite impossible, you know?” This reflection highlighted the personal conflict between cherished aspirations and stark medical prognosis, demonstrating her unwavering love alongside a pragmatic understanding of her life-limiting condition and its implications.

Navigating public scrutiny

Isabel Veloso discussed the difficulty coping with public criticism during her initial days as an influencer. She recounted how deeply affected she became whenever she encountered comments labeling her a liar, particularly from individuals who had not taken the time to understand her personal story.

“I sincerely think that each person should live their own life. The internet is a very rotten place,” she asserted, reflecting on online interaction’s darker aspects. She concluded, “People who are there still haven’t learned to live their own lives and are very unhappy.”

Isabel’s comprehensive cancer journey

Isabel Veloso received her diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma in October 2021, at age 15. The aggressive cancer manifested as a tumor in her neck and chest, severely impacting her breathing and compressing her heart.

By February 2022, she publicly shared the visible toll of her intensive treatment, showing followers she had lost her hair due to chemotherapy. In March of the same year, she completed her final session, a hopeful milestone.

However, this relief was short-lived. Just two months later, in May 2022, Veloso learned initial treatments had not yielded expected positive results, indicating cancer persistence. This necessitated a more intensive approach.

Following this, she underwent an autologous bone marrow transplant. In January 2023, she joyfully announced she had “beaten cancer,” continuing with immunotherapy until September 2023 to restore her health.

Relapse and terminal diagnosis

The arduous journey took another cruel turn in January 2024, when Isabel announced her tumor had returned, classified as terminal. This news was a profound blow, shifting her focus from a cure to managing the disease.

“Having a cancer that no longer has a cure hurts, and a lot, but knowing that I have the Lord with me, as well as the people I love, everything becomes lighter,” she publicly declared. Her statement reflected extraordinary spiritual fortitude.

This period underscored her incredible determination to live meaningfully despite her medical reality. Her public sharing resonated deeply, cementing her image as a courageous figure.

A brief remission and severe complications

In May 2024, Isabel emotionally announced a period of remission from her cancer, a significant and profoundly hopeful moment. Her subsequent plan involved another critical step: a bone marrow transplant from her father, showing 60% compatibility, offering renewed hope.

The intricate procedure was successful, leading to an early medical discharge. However, just 17 days later, Isabel required urgent re-hospitalization and was intubated in the intensive care unit due to severe respiratory distress from excessive magnesium in her blood, marking a severe complication.

Facing public accusations

Throughout her highly public health battle, Isabel Veloso faced numerous distressing challenges, including unverified accusations of fraud related to her journey. These claims, which she vehemently denied, added intense emotional distress to her already overwhelming medical condition, placing her under unfair public scrutiny.
