BYD, a Chinese giant in the electric and hybrid vehicle sector, confirmed the launch of the Dolphin G, a plug-in hybrid version of its popular hatchback, for the Brazilian market. The news is scheduled for the second half of the current year, as announced by Alexandre Baldy, vice president of BYD’s operations in the country.
Este strategic move aims to expand the brand’s presence in the national automotive scene, offering a more accessible option to consumers. The Dolphin G is already in the testing phase on Brazilian roads, generating great expectations among enthusiasts and potential buyers.
The introduction of a plug-in hybrid model in the Dolphin line reinforces BYD’s commitment to diversifying its portfolio. With the addition of this version, the Dolphin line should have three distinct options, serving different customer profiles and consolidating the brand in the electrified vehicle segment.
BYD dolphin G: the new bet for the national market
Confirmation of the Dolphin G came directly from Alexandre Baldy during an interview, where he detailed the automaker’s plans for the local market. The executive indicated that the plug-in hybrid version will make its debut in the second half of the year, marking an important step for BYD’s expansion strategy in the country.
Embora the name Dolphin G is provisional, in line with the hatchback’s European nomenclature, it should remain if there are no last minute changes before the official launch. The Esta hybrid version will join the Dolphin GS (electric) and the Dolphin Plus (also electric), forming a complete range of options for Brazilian consumers.
Price expectations and local production for affordability
One of the most encouraging news for consumers is the promise that the Dolphin G will have a lower purchase price than the electric version. Atualmente, the electric model is sold for around R$150 thousand, which suggests an aggressive pricing strategy for the new plug-in hybrid, making it even more competitive.
Cost reduction is directly associated with the possibility of local production. Embora Baldy has not confirmed the manufacture of the Dolphin G in Brazilian territory, BYD is in the process of expanding its factory in the country. National production can generate significant benefits, such as lower tax incidence and optimization of the supply chain, directly impacting the final value for the customer.
Manufacturing on Brazilian soil would not only boost the local economy, but would also position BYD more solidly against the competition. Essa initiative reinforces the automaker’s long-term vision of establishing itself as a key player in the development of sustainable mobility in the region, with more accessible vehicles adapted to market needs.
The flexibility of BYD’s DM-i hybrid suite
BYD’s hybrid system, known as DM-i, is one of the automaker’s technological pillars and will be applied to the Dolphin G. Este system combines the efficiency of a combustion engine with the performance of an electric drive, offering a versatile and economical driving experience.
At the heart of the DM-i system is a 1.5 four-cylinder combustion engine, which incorporates direct injection and operates on the Atkinson cycle. Esta configuration is designed to maximize fuel efficiency by optimizing combustion and reducing energy consumption under various usage conditions.
Complementando the combustion engine, there is a transmission with just one physical gear, which simplifies the mechanics and improves the transition between propulsion modes. The system is integrated with an electric motor, whose power may vary depending on the specific vehicle application, ensuring adequate performance for each model.
Como example of performance, the DM-i system in the Song Pro features a combustion engine with 98 hp and 12.4 kgfm of torque, working together with an electric motor with 197 hp and 30.6 kgfm of torque. Combined power reaches 235 hp, providing robust and efficient driving. The batteries, with 18.3 kWh capacity, ensure a range of 62 km in all-electric mode, in accordance with the standards of the Inmetro, data that serves as a basis for estimating the potential of the Dolphin G.
Dual-fuel potential and relevance for the consumer
An issue that is still open, but of great interest to the market, is the possibility of the Dolphin G being launched as a flex-fuel vehicle. BYD has already been working on the development of a dual-fuel hybrid set, with experimental units of the Song Pro already equipped with this technology being tested on the Brasil.
The inclusion of flex-fuel technology would be a significant competitive differentiator for the Dolphin G in the country. The Brazilian market greatly values the ability to use both gasoline and ethanol, which offers greater autonomy of choice and savings potential for the consumer, adapting to variations in fuel prices and regional availability.
Expansion of the BYD line in the Brazilian automotive scene
BYD has demonstrated notable growth in the Brazilian automotive market, consolidating its presence with the launch of several models. Veículos like the Dolphin Mini, the King and the Song Pro are already part of the automaker’s catalogue, which is constantly seeking to expand its offer to meet the varied demands of consumers.
Para this year, the brand has already confirmed that the Song Plus will also be produced locally, a move that reinforces the commitment to industrialization in the country. The Dolphin G, with its potential for national production, could become the fifth BYD vehicle manufactured on Brazilian soil. Essa expansion of portfolio and production capacity is strategic for BYD, allowing the company to explore different market segments and offer mobility solutions that align with the expectations and needs of consumers in different regions.
The impact of the plug-in hybrid segment on the energy transition
The arrival of models such as the Dolphin G, a plug-in hybrid, has a significant impact on the country’s energy transition. Estes vehicles represent an important bridge between conventional combustion cars and pure electric ones, facilitating the adoption of cleaner technologies by a wider public.
By offering the flexibility of extended range from the combustion engine and the efficiency of electric propulsion, plug-in hybrids help mitigate “range anxiety” and overcome charging infrastructure barriers. Isso contributes to reducing pollutant emissions and moving towards a more sustainable transport matrix in the urban and road environment.
