The data, compiled and published by the renowned specialized magazine Famitsu, confirms not only the success of the console, but also its profound impact on the entire sector. The launch was the main catalyst for significant growth in the home console games market, significantly boosting revenue.
With this result, Nintendo reaffirms its undisputed leadership in the Japanese market, a position that the company has maintained for more than two decades. The new model was responsible for more than half of all video game hardware sold in the country during the year analyzed, demonstrating the strength of the brand and high consumer expectations.
Absolute dominance in the hardware rankings
The Japanese consumer’s preference for Nintendo products was clearly evidenced in the 2025 sales figures. The Nintendo Switch 2 topped the ranking with a significant margin over all competitors. Somando the sales of the new model with those of its predecessor, the Nintendo completely dominated the market. The complete list of Japão hardware sales for the period was as follows: the Nintendo Switch 2 with 3,784,067 units, followed by the original Nintendo Switch model with 1,520,384. In a distant third position, the PlayStation 5 recorded 879,204 units sold. The Xbox Series X|S had a modest performance with 31,226 units, while the PlayStation 4, already at the end of its life cycle, sold 1,087 units. Juntos, consoles from the Switch line represented more than 90% of all hardware sales in the country, a feat that solidifies the company’s position and highlights the difficulty of competitors in penetrating this specific market.
Hegemony extended to software
Nintendo’s control was not limited to hardware, extending equally impressively to the physical media gaming market. The company was responsible for nine of the ten best-selling titles of the year, marking the 21st consecutive year in which it has led this segment. Essa performance demonstrates the company’s ability to create content that resonates directly with local audiences, ensuring gamers’ loyalty to their exclusive platforms.
The big highlight was the launch game Mario Kart World, which alone sold 2,668,381 copies for Switch 2, easily surpassing all other releases. The strength of consolidated franchises such as Pokémon and Splatoon was also visible, with their new titles occupying prominent positions in the annual ranking. In total, of the twenty best-selling games in physical format, eighteen belonged to Nintendo, a concentration that illustrates the perfect symbiosis between successful hardware and an irresistible software catalog for Japanese gamers.
The growth of the Japanese games market
The release of Nintendo Switch 2 had a transformative effect on the entire gaming ecosystem at Japão. The total value of the home console industry jumped from 3,013.2 billion yen in 2024 to 4,181.3 billion yen in 2025, a remarkable increase of 38.8%.
Most of this growth was driven directly by hardware sales, which saw a 49.3% increase in revenue, rising from 1,894 billion yen to 2,826 billion yen. Essa expansion reflects the rapid adoption of the new console by consumers.
The software segment also benefited, recording a 21% increase in revenue. The success of the hardware created a robust installed base eager for new games, which boosted sales of titles from both Nintendo and other developers.
Contrasting performance from competitors
While Nintendo celebrated records, its main competitors faced a challenging scenario in the Japanese market. Sony saw PlayStation 5 sales drop dramatically, going from approximately 1.4 million units in 2024 to less than 900,000 in 2025.
This nearly 60% reduction can be attributed to a combination of factors, including strong competition from Nintendo’s new hardware and possible adjustments to Sony’s pricing and distribution strategy for the region.
Microsoft, in turn, continued with a very limited presence. The Xbox Series X|S sold less than 32 thousand units, confirming the historical trend of low reception of the brand’s platforms in the Japão.
The Nintendo backwards compatibility strategy, which allows games from the original Switch to run on the new model, was a crucial factor in facilitating the transition for users and accelerating the adoption of the
Nintendo’s consolidated strategy
The success of Switch 2 is not an isolated event, but rather the continuation of a long-standing strategy that Nintendo has honed over several console generations. The company has always excelled in the Japão with its portable and hybrid devices, such as the Nintendo DS and 3DS, which dominated the market in their respective eras.
The formula of combining innovative hardware with franchises loved by families and gamers of all ages, such as Mario, Pokémon and Zelda, proves effective time and time again. Essa approach creates a strong and resilient ecosystem, less susceptible to the high-performance graphics gaming trends that dominate the Western market.
Company trajectory in Japão
Nintendo has built a stronghold in its home market. The performance of the Switch 2, which accumulated significant sales in less than a full fiscal year, surpassed even the most optimistic projections and reinforced a leadership streak that has lasted more than two decades, with rare exceptions.
The focus on unique and accessible gaming experiences continues to be the company’s main differentiator. Títulos like Mario Kart World exemplify this philosophy, offering immediate enjoyment to a wide audience and ensuring the console is a desired item in millions of Japanese homes, solidifying the user base for years to come.
Consolidated data for the period
It is important to note that the numbers released by Famitsu refer mainly to physical retail sales. Although the digital market has grown in importance, physical sales data is still an accurate thermometer of consumption trends in Japão and confirms Nintendo’s leadership in all monitored aspects.
