BYD Auto Japan made a robust presence at the 2026 Salão of Automóvel of The event, one of the main personalization and automotive technology meetings at Japão, served as a stage for the Chinese automaker to reinforce its expansion strategy in the competitive Japanese market, positioning the year as a milestone for its consolidation.

The highlight of the stand was the kei EV Racco, a compact electric model designed specifically to meet local regulations and preferences. Scheduled to launch in the summer of 2026, the vehicle represents a bold bet by BYD to enter the popular kei car segment, traditionally dominated by Japanese manufacturers.

In addition to the Racco, the company presented models that make up its current and future portfolio, including the recently launched plug-in hybrid SUV Sealion 6 and updated versions of the already known Dolphin, Atto 3 and Seal. Participation, for the third time in a row, signals BYD’s long-term commitment to offering electric and electrified mobility alternatives to consumers in the country.

The strategic kei EV Racco for the Japanese market

The introduction of EV Racco kei is a calculated move by BYD to penetrate one of Japão’s most important and resilient niches. Kei cars, ultra-compact vehicles with tax advantages and ideal for dense urban traffic, represent a significant portion of total car sales in the country. By developing an electric model for this category, BYD not only adapts to local regulations, but also directly challenges established automakers in its own territory. The Racco adopts a “super height wagon” style body, very popular among Japanese consumers for maximizing internal space in reduced external dimensions. The strategy aims to attract an urban public looking for an economical, sustainable and practical vehicle for everyday use, combining the efficiency of an electric motor with the convenience of a well-known format.

Technical specifications and versions of the new compact

To suit different usage profiles, the kei EV Racco will be offered in two lithium-ion battery configurations with BYD’s proprietary technology. The entry-level version will come equipped with a battery of approximately 20 kWh, which will provide a range of more than 200 kilometers on a full charge, making it a suitable option for daily commutes and urban routines.

There will also be a long-range variant, with a higher capacity battery, around 30 kWh, increasing the range to more than 300 kilometers. Esta version aims to serve consumers who travel longer journeys or want greater flexibility without constantly worrying about recharging. The company plans to launch an exclusive website for the model in February 2026, setting the stage for the official start of sales in the summer.

DM-i hybrid technology as a pillar of expansion

BYD also announced the arrival of two new plug-in hybrid models for 2026, both based on the advanced DM-i platform.

This technology prioritizes electric traction most of the time, using the combustion engine mainly as an energy generator to recharge the battery.

The first model will be the Atto 2, a compact SUV that will combine a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with a high-efficiency electric unit.

The second will be the Seal 6, a medium station wagon that follows the same architecture, offering predominantly electric operation to reduce consumption and emissions.

Sealion 6 as a gateway to plug-in hybrids

Officially launched in December 2025, the Sealion 6 was BYD’s first plug-in hybrid to reach the Japão, positioning itself as a competitive option in the medium SUV segment. The model was prominently displayed at Salão of Tóquio, reinforcing the brand’s new phase in the country.

With a starting price below 4 million yen for the front-wheel drive (FWD) version, the Sealion 6 seeks to attract consumers who want to transition to an electrified vehicle without giving up practicality. Deliveries of the FWD variant will begin at the end of January 2026, with the all-wheel drive (AWD) option expected to follow.

Diverse portfolio on display at the event

BYD’s booth at Salão of Automóvel of Tóquio demonstrated the breadth of its product line. Além of the new products, the brand displayed already consolidated models, such as the compact Dolphin, presented in its Long Range version with specification updates.

The Atto 3 electric SUV was also present in a limited edition, while the Seal sedan reaffirmed its position as the brand’s most sophisticated offering, focusing on performance and premium finish.

Completing the display, the Sealion 7 crossover stood out for its bold design, showing that BYD is prepared to compete in multiple segments, from compact urban vehicles to high-end models.

Challenges and brand consolidation in Japão

BYD’s aggressive strategy includes strengthening its network of dealerships and service centers across the archipelago, a fundamental step towards building consumer confidence and ensuring efficient after-sales support, competing directly with the reach of local brands.

BYD’s vision for Japanese mobility

Participation in Tokyo Auto Salon 2026 solidifies BYD’s image as a force to be reckoned with in Japão. The company demonstrates a clear understanding of the particularities of the local market by investing in an electric kei car and efficient hybrids.

The combination of cutting-edge technology, competitive prices and an increasingly broad portfolio forms the basis of the automaker’s plan to become a relevant player in the energy transition of the Japanese automotive sector in the coming years.
