An ambitious project led by 21-year-old Rio developer Wengel Hiago is recreating the city of Rio from Janeiro and its metropolitan regions with an unprecedented level of realism. What started as a modification to the popular game GTA V has evolved into a standalone title, promising a free, immersive experience for PC gamers.

The initiative, which gained notoriety on social media after the release of test videos, seeks to fill a gap left by other mods, which often included Brazilian elements in isolation, but without the geographic fidelity and urban complexity of the capital of Rio de Janeiro. The new game is being developed on the powerful Unreal Engine 5, allowing for a significant graphical and technical leap.

Using public 3D scanning data, the project reproduces with high precision the streets, buildings and the characteristic relief of Rio. The proposal is to offer an online environment where players can explore the city on a real scale, defining their own roles and creating a dynamic virtual community within a familiar setting.

The transition from mod to standalone game

The positive repercussion was the main catalyst for the project’s transformation. Vídeos demonstrating the initial stages of development reached millions of views, causing Wengel Hiago’s profile on Instagram to reach almost 50 thousand followers and validating the public’s great interest in a faithful representation of the Brazilian gaming scene.

This engagement attracted the attention of partners and enabled the migration to Unreal Engine 5. The change of graphics engine gave the team greater creative control and more advanced tools to optimize the city’s unique details, from the texture of the sidewalks to the complex topography of the hills.

As the game evolved, the concept also expanded. The new format will be 100% online, without an imposed linear narrative. The idea is that players themselves create their stories and interactions, taking on roles ranging from police officers to bus drivers, fostering a lively and unpredictable virtual ecosystem.

The technology behind Rio realism

The basis for building the digital map is a detailed 3D scan of the city, carried out in 2019 by Instituto Pereira Passos. Esses data, which generates a cloud of three-dimensional points, allows the accurate reproduction of buildings, roads and relief, ensuring that proportions and distances are faithful to reality. The development team carries out detailed cartographic adjustment work to correct the curvature of the Terra, adapting the model to the flat environment of the games. Além of the overall structure, there is an intense focus on the details that give the city its identity: street signs, lamp posts, facade textures and sidewalks are treated individually to avoid the feeling of repetition and increase immersion. In the current phase, the priority is modeling the interiors of high-traffic public places, such as airports and bus stations, with the possibility of adding residences in future updates.

Fidelity in everyday details

The project’s greatest difference lies in its attention to the everyday elements that make up Rio’s urban landscape. The team is dedicated to faithfully reproducing the aspects that make the virtual experience immediately recognizable to those who know the city.

This includes creating police vehicles with the official liveries used by state security forces, as well as the correct uniforms for different corporations.

The game’s fleet of vehicles also reflects the reality of the streets, with models of common national cars circulating around the map. Road signage, such as traffic signs and street names, follows authentic standards.

These items, added to the varied textures of facades and sidewalks, are fundamental to building a sense of belonging and immersion, transforming the map into a true digital mirror of the city.

Geographic scope and representation of the state

The project’s ambition goes beyond the limits of the capital. The map under development plans to cover an extensive geographic area, including important municipalities in Região Metropolitana and the interior of the state. Áreas as well as Baixada Fluminense, Niterói and the mountainous region of Petrópolis are in the plans, seeking to offer a more complete and diverse representation of Rio and

Locations such as Mangaratiba and Itaboraí are also part of the expanded scope, which demonstrates the logistical and technical complexity of the initiative. Developing each detailed neighborhood is a time-consuming process; It is estimated that a team of ten dedicated professionals would take around six months to complete a single area, which highlights the magnitude of work required to realize the map’s complete vision.

Availability and access model

The game will be distributed free of charge via the Helix platform, which can be accessed by Steam. Inicialmente, the launch will be exclusive to PC, but the developers have not ruled out the possibility of creating versions for consoles in future phases, depending on success and technical feasibility.

The game’s online structure is one of its pillars, allowing the player community itself to define the culture and dynamics of the virtual environment. The freedom to choose different roles is an invitation to creativity and social interaction within the game universe.

Community reaction and next steps

The response from the gaming community has been extremely positive, with the project’s videos and updates generating high engagement and enthusiastic discussions on social media. Esse initial support was crucial to confirm the demand for games that authentically represent Brazilian scenarios.

Strategically, the team works with the schedule of releasing a playable version before the arrival of the highly anticipated GTA VI. Essa window of opportunity can attract a large player base and consolidate the project as a reference in the national independent development scene.

The challenges of production

Maintaining fidelity and rich detail on such a large scale requires considerable production time. The biggest technical challenge is balancing visual quality with performance optimization, ensuring the game is accessible and runs smoothly across a wide range of hardware configurations.
