Amazon announced that the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, its premium e-reader with a color screen, will receive a long-awaited software update throughout 2026. The main new feature is the implementation of a complete dark mode, which will cover the entire system interface, meeting a recurring request from users since the device’s launch at the end of 2025.

The change promises to significantly improve the reading and browsing experience, especially in low-light environments. Além of the visual improvement, the update package will include new features based on artificial intelligence, expanding the device’s capabilities beyond traditional reading and note-taking.

Currently, the device only offers a limited color inversion, restricted to the content of digital books, while menus, library and the home screen remain with a light background. The new version of the software will fix this limitation by applying the dark theme consistently across all areas of the operating system.

Details of the new preview functionality

The dark mode that will be implemented on Kindle Scribe Colorsoft will work systemically. Isso means that, when activated, the background of all screens, including the book library, configuration menus, notebooks and the Kindle store, will turn black, with text displayed in white.

This functionality differs drastically from the “Page Color” option available today. The current tool only inverts the colors within the pages of a compatible e-book, which creates a break in the visual experience when the user needs to navigate through the device’s interface, which remains clear and can cause visual discomfort.

Visual uniformity is a standard in modern electronic devices and its absence in the Scribe Colorsoft was noted as one of the main drawbacks upon its release. The update aligns the premium model with market expectations and other devices in the Kindle line, such as the Paperwhite, which have had the feature for years.

For color E-Ink displays, dark mode offers an additional technical benefit. Ele helps minimize the perception of the color filter grid (Color Filter Array), a layer on the E-Ink panel that can be subtly visible on white backgrounds, providing a cleaner, more immersive image.

Current limitations and user response

Since the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft hit the market in October 2025, the lack of a full dark mode has been one of the most consistent criticisms from consumers and technology experts. The expectation was that a device positioned at the top of the Amazon line of e-readers, with a focus on productivity and advanced reading, would already come with this basic functionality.

The current restriction forces users who prefer dark interfaces to deal with an abrupt transition between book content and the rest of the system. In low-light environments, such as when reading at night, this constant change from a black background to a bright white can cause eye strain and interrupt reading immersion, negating part of the comfort provided by the E-Ink screen.

Artificial intelligence enhancements

The software update will not be limited to just visual improvements. Amazon will also integrate new artificial intelligence tools to enrich interaction with content. One of the new features will be “AI

Another announced function is “Ask This Book”, which will allow users to ask direct questions about the content of the work, such as “who is this character?” or “what events led to this situation?”. The device’s AI will provide contextual responses based exclusively on what has already been read, functioning as an intelligent reading assistant.

These features will be in addition to existing AI capabilities, such as integration with Alexa Plus, and will be available on thousands of selected titles on Kindle Store. The implementation will be done via over-the-air (OTA) update, at no additional cost to Scribe Colorsoft owners.

The positioning of Kindle Scribe Colorsoft in the market

The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft was launched as Amazon’s response to the growing market for e-notes, devices that combine digital reading with the ability to write and take notes using a stylus. Sua 11-inch high-resolution color E-Ink screen differentiates it from simpler models, being aimed at students, professionals and readers who need to actively interact with documents and PDFs.

With a thin, light design and long battery life, it positions itself as a productivity and study tool. The addition of full dark mode and new AI functions reinforces this premium positioning, making it more competitive against rivals from brands such as Kobo and Boox, which already offer advanced interfaces and features on their high-end devices.

Technical advantages of color screen

The E-Ink Kaleido 3 technology, used in the Scribe Colorsoft, allows the display of 4,096 colors, ideal for reading magazines, comics, children’s books and viewing graphics in technical documents. The screen maintains the main advantages of electronic ink, such as the absence of reflections in sunlight and low power consumption, providing weeks of battery life with moderate use. The built-in front lighting, with color temperature adjustment, guarantees visual comfort in any lighting condition, from bright environments to total darkness, a benefit that will be enhanced with the arrival of dark mode.

Expectations for update rollout

Amazon has not yet released a specific date for the release of the update, only stating that it will take place at some point in 2026. The distribution will be done gradually and automatically for all devices connected to an Wi-Fi network, without the need for any action on the part of the user.

Improved annotation integration

With the update, better integration of notes made with the stylus in dark mode is also expected. The ability to write in white or light “ink” on a dark notebook background is a desired feature for those who use the device to take notes in meetings or classes in low light, completing the usage experience in all scenarios.
