Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially announced an important restructuring of its console distribution line in the Japanese market, marking the end of an era for the 2020 launch model. The company confirmed that the sale of the purely digital version of the video game, known for not having a fixed disc player, will be terminated to concentrate efforts on the new hardware revision. Esta decision aims to optimize the supply chain and offer greater flexibility to consumers through the newly introduced modular design.
Production line unification
The strategic move’s main objective is to simplify the manufacturer’s logistics and inventory management. By discontinuing the old digital model, the company is now focusing on the new console architecture, popularly called the “Slim” model. Este new design allows users to purchase the digital version and, if desired in the future, attach a Ultra HD Blu-ray reader sold separately, eliminating the need to manufacture two completely different chassis.
For retail and the company’s own internal management, the change represents a significant efficiency gain. Consolidation into a modular base model reduces the complexity of maintaining stocks of two fixed variants, allowing for a more agile response to market demands. The Japanese consumer, in turn, has the option of not being tied to a definitive initial choice, being able to physically upgrade the device according to their need to use physical media.
Technical specifications and improvements
The new version that takes center stage on Japanese shelves brings notable physical changes compared to the 2020 model. The console features a volume reduction of more than 30%, making it more compact and easier to accommodate in different living room configurations and gaming setups. Apesar of the decrease in size, the system’s raw performance remains unchanged, maintaining the same processors and graphics capabilities that define the current generation.
One of the most praised points in the update is the increase in internal storage capacity. The new standard increases the available space on the SSD from 825 GB to 1 TB, responding to a long-standing demand from gamers for more space for increasingly larger game installations. Essa improvement ensures that, even opting for the digital model initially, the user has greater scope to manage their library of downloaded titles.
Prices and accessories in the local market
With the transition, the pricing structure on Japão also adjusts to the new reality of modular hardware. The removable disk reader, which becomes the key to the versatility of the new system, was priced at 11,980 yen. Isso allows the initial investment in the console to be lower, with the cost of the reader being diluted or postponed according to the buyer’s wishes.
Compatibility with the existing ecosystem remains complete. Todos previously released accessories, such as the DualSense controller, the Pulse 3D headset and the PlayStation VR2 virtual reality system, work perfectly with the new model. The Sony reinforces that the gaming experience, including 4K playback and rates of up to 120 frames per second, remains the central pillar, now delivered in a more versatile and logistically efficient package.
