The Cupertino technology giant has officially announced a significant restructuring of its global assembly line, confirming the immediate discontinuation of three devices that have been present on the market in recent years. The decision directly affects the production of the iPhone 14, the iPhone 14 Plus and the third generation of the iPhone SE, models that will no longer be manufactured to make room for devices compatible with the new neural processing requirements. Essa strategic move aims to align the company’s entire portfolio with the capabilities of Apple Intelligence, the brand’s new artificial intelligence platform that requires more robust hardware to fully function.

Technical limitations of the A15 Bionic chip

The determining factor for the end of production of these devices lies in the architecture of their processors. Tanto the standard iPhone 14 line and the SE model use the A15 Bionic chip, a component that, although it has delivered excellent performance since its launch in 2022, does not have the necessary architecture to execute the complex algorithms of the company’s new generative artificial intelligence. Apple established that only devices equipped with the A17 Pro chip or higher have the neural processing capacity required to integrate the modern functionalities of the iOS operating system.

This transition forced by the advancement of software marks an inflection point in the company’s hardware strategy. By removing incompatible models from its main production line, the company eliminates feature fragmentation among its products for sale, ensuring that any consumer purchasing a new iPhone from now on will have access to the full suite of digital tools, including advanced image editing and contextual virtual assistants.

The new positioning of the iPhone 15 line

With the departure of previous models, the iPhone 15 series takes on the role of protagonist and new entry standard for those looking for an updated and durable device. The change is not just limited to the processor, but brings a standardization of physical resources that the company has been seeking to implement for some time. Consumers who upgrade to the remaining models will find a unified ecosystem that includes the Ilha Dinâmica replacing the old notch, universal adoption of the USB-C port for charging and data transfer, and 48 MP camera sensors that offer superior resolution for computational photography.

The simplification of the product offering makes it easier for consumers to choose, as they will no longer need to decide between a cheaper model with an old Lightning connector or a more expensive model with USB-C. The strategy pushes the market towards faster adoption of modern peripherals and accessories, reducing the need to maintain production lines for cables and adapters from previous generations.

Ongoing support and security updates

Despite the end of manufacturing, it is crucial to highlight that the millions of current users of the iPhone 14 and iPhone SE will not be left destitute. Apple’s software support policy remains unchanged, ensuring security updates and bug fixes for an estimated five to six years after the last device is sold. Isso means that, although these devices will not receive the new artificial intelligence functions, they will continue to be functional, secure and compatible with the vast majority of applications available on App Store for a long time.

The iOS software lifecycle will continue to deliver stability and performance improvements to legacy hardware. The distinction will only be clear in the exclusive features of the Apple Intelligence, creating a natural segmentation where users who need AI tools will be encouraged to upgrade, while those who use their smartphone for essential tasks will be able to keep their current devices without compromising the security of their data.

Commercial strategy and portfolio unification

The removal of these models from the shelves reflects a commercial maneuver to increase the average sales price and focus on products with higher added value. By eliminating input options that used dated designs, like the iPhone SE’s Home button, the Apple modernizes the visual identity of your entire storefront. The movement suggests that future launches, such as a possible new generation of the SE model, will already hit the market with infinite screens and processors prepared for the era of artificial intelligence, preventing the brand from selling technologically obsolete products in its official stores.
