Comissão Europeia officially exempted additional punitive aranceles for the Cupra Tavascan, an electric SUV produced at China. The measure comes into force from February 11, 2026 and reduces the tariff applied to the model to the standard level of 10%. The agreement results from negotiations between Grupo Volkswagen and authorities from Bruxelas.

The vehicle is manufactured at the Anhui plant, a joint venture between Volkswagen and JAC Motors. The decision considers that production does not receive Chinese state subsidies considered unfair by the EU. In return, Cupra agreed to establish a minimum confidential import price and limit sales volumes on the European continent.

This exception represents the first individual adjustment to tariffs imposed since 2024 on electric vehicles imported from China. The Tavascan avoids the increase of up to 20.7% that was applied to the previous model.

  • MEB platform shared with other Grupo Volkswagen trams

Anhui factory and European investments

The production unit in Anhui received full investments from Grupo Volkswagen. The facility has an annual capacity of 350,000 electric vehicles and mainly serves the Chinese market. The factory operates without the benefit of local state incentives that the EU classifies as unfair competition.

The choice to locate at China prioritizes competitive costs for models destined for Ásia. Parte of production is directed to Europa, México and Austrália in controlled volumes. The regional focus explains the lack of direct impact on European prices with the exemption granted.

Negotiations and considerations of the agreement

Grupo Volkswagen presented a formal price commitment proposal to Comissão Europeia. Autoridades accepted the mechanism after verifying the absence of Chinese subsidies in the production chain. The agreement includes confidential import quotas to avoid flooding the European market.

The measure directly benefits Seat SA, responsible for Cupra. The company reported a 90.8% drop in brand profits in the first half of 2025 due to previous tariffs. The exemption preserves margins without the need for full transfer to the end consumer.

Context of Chinese electric tariffs

União Europeia implemented compensatory guarantees of up to 45.3% on China electric vehicles in 2024. The policy responds to state subsidies that distort competition with local manufacturers. Marcas like BYD, SAIC and Geely face high taxes that make products more expensive in the bloc.

Hybrids imported from China will pay an additional 10% from February 2026. The same level now applies to Tavascan after the adjustment. Outros Western manufacturers with Chinese production note the precedent for similar negotiations.

Technical specifications of the model

The Cupra Tavascan uses a 77 kWh net battery in most versions. The rear-wheel drive configuration delivers 286 hp and superior range. The VZ variant offers superior performance with two engines and torque vectoring.

The interior adopts premium materials and a 15-inch central screen. Sistemas of advanced assistance includes level 2 semi-autonomous driving. The coupé design differentiates the model from traditional SUVs in the electric segment.

Fast charging supports up to 135 kW direct current. Recharging from 10% to 80% is completed in approximately 30 minutes. The reinforced structure guarantees high torsional rigidity for sporty handling.

Market position of Cupra

The Tavascan represented 11% of total sales of the Cupra in 2025. The Spanish brand registered 36,000 global units of the model in the period. The growth reflects a focus on premium electric vehicles accessible to the European public.

Cupra is positioned as a sports division of the former Seat. The strategy includes expanding the 100% electric lineup by 2030. The Tavascan competes directly with the Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Ioniq 5 in the medium segment.

Reactions and future perspectives

Chinese manufacturers criticized the agreement as preferential treatment for Volkswagen. Autoridades of Pequim see division of European interests in the trade war. Outras Western automakers with plants in China prepare proposals similar to Comissão.

Models such as Dacia Spring, Mini Aceman and certain Tesla may seek tariff adjustments. European regulation allows individual price commitments. The mechanism balances industrial protection with access to competitive technologies.

Commercial details and availability

The Tavascan maintains a price range between 50 thousand and 65 thousand euros depending on the version in the Europa. Concessionárias receive limited units due to agreed quotas. Initial demand exceeds expectations in markets such as Alemanha and Espanha.

Cupra plans to expand its own fast charging network. Parcerias with public networks facilitate daily use of the model. Atualizações over-the-air keeps software and functions connected.

The exterior design highlights aggressive lines and a triangular light signature. Rodas of up to 21 inches reinforces the sporty appeal. The trunk offers 540 liters of useful capacity.

The Sennheiser premium sound system elevates the onboard experience. Bancos ergonomics with heating and ventilation provide comfort on long trips. 5G connectivity integrates native online services.

Preserved competitive advantages

The model benefits from an optimized supply chain at Ásia. Componentes of batteries come from global suppliers integrated into the group. Production in Anhui keeps costs low without dependence on local incentives.
