Chinese manufacturer BYD began a new phase of its international expansion during Tokyo Auto Salon, introducing a robust commercial offensive aimed at capturing a larger share of the demanding Japanese automotive market. The event, held between January 9th and 11th, served as the stage for the unveiling of six new models that make up the brand’s updated portfolio. The strategy focuses on introducing vehicles developed specifically for local needs and diversifying engine options.
The company’s move seeks to compete directly with traditional Japão automakers in high-volume segments. By combining new launches with the update of existing models, the brand signals a long-term commitment to the region, investing not only in products, but in building an image of reliability and technological innovation.
Bet on compacts and hybrid technology
The highlight of the presentation was the world premiere of the Racco, a compact electric vehicle designed for the “kei car” segment, extremely popular in Japanese metropolises. The model arrives with the mission of offering efficient and accessible urban mobility, positioning itself as a direct alternative to established competitors such as Nissan Sakura. The proposal includes reduced dimensions that facilitate parking and maneuverability in narrow streets.
To meet different usage profiles, the Racco will be sold with two battery options. The entry-level version has a capacity of 20 kWh, offering an estimated range of 200 kilometers, ideal for daily commuting in cities. Já the superior configuration has a 30 kWh battery, extending the range to up to 300 kilometers, which provides greater flexibility for drivers.
In addition to full electrification, the automaker introduced its DM-i plug-in hybrid technology for the first time in the Japão. Essa decisão estratégica visa atrair consumidores que ainda possuem receio quanto à infraestrutura de recarga ou que necessitam de veículos para longas distâncias sem as limitações de autonomia dos elétricos puros.
Line renewal and new utilities
The expansion of the catalog includes the Sealion 6, a medium SUV that uses the brand’s new hybrid platform. The model combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with a high-efficiency electric motor, promising a combined range that exceeds the 1,000 kilometer mark, focusing on families who make frequent trips.
Another relevant novelty is the Seal 06 sedan, which also adopts the plug-in hybrid system. The vehicle was developed to offer comfort and economy, competing for space in the medium sedan segment with a focus on energy efficiency and reducing emissions, without sacrificing dynamic performance.
Models that were already present on the market also received significant updates. The Dolphin hatchback gained a new “Long Range” version, responding to calls for greater range, while the Atto 3 SUV underwent technical refinements based on feedback from early Japanese customers. Completando the list of launches, the Sealion 7 was confirmed as a coupe-style SUV, bringing a bolder and sportier design to attract a younger and more enthusiastic audience.
The product strategy is complemented by a continuous effort to expand the dealership and service network. The company understands that, to consolidate its presence in the Japão, it is essential to offer agile and widespread after-sales support, strengthening consumer confidence in relation to the foreign brand.
