The Japanese electronic entertainment giant officially marked a new era in its commercial trajectory by releasing consolidated data from the last fiscal year. The numbers reveal that the hybrid platform surpassed the barrier of 155 million units distributed globally by the end of December, guaranteeing the top of the corporation’s internal hardware ranking. Este achievement symbolizes a significant change in the industry, proving the longevity of a system that unified the domestic and portable markets in an unprecedented way.

The hunt for the top of history

The exact volume of 155.37 million consoles surpasses the historical mark of the Nintendo DS, which stood at 154.02 million throughout its life cycle. Agora, the device occupies second position on the list of best-selling video games of all time, drastically closing the gap to the absolute leader, the PlayStation 2 from Sony, which maintains the record above 160 million.

Market analysts point out that the strategy of unifying portable and tabletop game libraries was the decisive factor for this sustained performance for almost a decade. The ability to serve different player profiles with a single device allowed market penetration that has stood the test of time and the arrival of competitors with greater graphics processing power.

Impact of software on performance

The massive installed base was driven by titles with universal appeal that continue to sell millions of copies years after release. Franquias as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: The software ecosystem has reached an impressive milestone of over 1.4 billion games sold, creating a virtuous cycle of engagement that keeps the platform relevant and profitable.

Transition to the new generation

The launch of the successor, which took place in June 2025, did not abruptly slow down interest in the previous model, but created a new complementary revenue stream. The new hardware, popularly referred to as Switch 2, recorded 17.37 million units sold in its first six months on the market, demonstrating a faster initial adoption rate than its predecessor. The company observes a healthy coexistence between the two generations, with a gradual migration of the user base to the more powerful and backwards compatible system.

Economic challenges on the horizon

Despite robust sales numbers and consolidated leadership, the fiscal report brought important warnings about the production scenario for the current year 2026. Management expects a considerable increase in the costs of essential components, specifically semiconductors and memory, which could pressure operating profit margins in the coming quarters. Investidores reacted cautiously to the projections, considering the delicate balance between projected sales volume and the increase in the cost of global technological manufacturing.
