The Japanese automaker officially returned one of the most celebrated names in its history to the Brazilian market, ending a commercial hiatus that lasted more than two decades. The announcement, made during a strategic event in São Paulo, confirmed that the model will arrive in the country imported directly from Japão, positioned as a technological showcase that combines the brand’s sporting tradition with new global energy efficiency requirements. The strategy aims to win back enthusiasts who followed the vehicle’s trajectory in the 90s, while at the same time presenting a sophisticated alternative for a new generation of consumers seeking exclusivity in a market dominated by sports utility vehicles.

The coupe arrives to occupy a prominent position in the company’s portfolio, sitting just below the Civic Type R in terms of aggressiveness, but with a proposal much more focused on the balance between daily use and dynamic performance. The brand’s engineering has worked to ensure that handling remains engaging, using electrification to not only reduce emissions, but to improve throttle response and torque distribution. With the confirmation that sales will begin in the second half of the year, the expectation is that the model will redefine the entry-level sports car segment in the national luxury market.

The decision to bring the vehicle back reflects a calculated move by the automotive industry, which seeks to restore the emotional connection with the act of driving. Diferente of SUVs that prioritize space and functionality, this launch focuses on the experience behind the wheel, offering a low driving position and a cabin that “hugs” the driver. The combination of a nostalgic design with modern propulsion is the bet to differentiate the product in a scenario where most electric and hybrid launches have very similar looks and dynamic behavior.

Motorization and energy efficiency

The heart of the new coupe is the renowned e:HEV system, which was recalibrated specifically for this platform to extract maximum performance without compromising autonomy. The mechanical set is made up of a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder combustion engine, which works in synergy with two high-capacity electric motors. The operating logic prioritizes electric traction in most urban and moderate-speed road scenarios, using the thermal engine mainly as an energy generator for the batteries, which results in smooth and silent operation.

The technical data revealed indicates that the model delivers a combined power of 203 horsepower, with an instantaneous torque of 32.1 kgfm, figures that guarantee safe overtaking and vigorous exits from traffic lights. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is achieved in approximately 7 seconds, a respectable time that puts it on par with similarly priced German competitors. The e-CVT transmission received special programming that simulates gear changes during full acceleration, avoiding the “skating” sensation common in conventional hybrids and providing more natural auditory feedback for the driver.

In addition to performance, efficiency is one of the central pillars of the project, with preliminary measurements pointing to urban consumption that could reach 18 km/l. Para To ensure that the dynamic behavior honors the legacy of the name, the front suspension uses double wishbones inherited from the brand’s high-performance line, offering surgical precision in curves. The braking system also received special attention, incorporating components from the Brembo with four-piston calipers, essential for containing the car’s momentum during sporty driving and ensuring maximum safety.

External design and internal finish

Visually, the project adopts the “glider” concept, characterized by fluid and clean lines that avoid excess creases, creating a timeless and aerodynamic silhouette. The low, wide front end, with LED headlights interconnected by a light bar, gives it an imposing presence on the streets, while the side profile highlights the smooth slope of the roof towards the short rear. Para For customers looking for even more exclusivity and weight reduction, there will be the option of a carbon fiber roof, a detail that not only improves aesthetics, but also lowers the vehicle’s center of gravity.

Inside, the 2+2 configuration makes it clear that the focus is on the driver and front passenger, who enjoy sports seats with pronounced side flaps and premium suede and leather upholstery. The rear space is intentionally compact, serving for short journeys or as an extension of the trunk, which offers 663 liters of capacity with the seats folded down. Onboard technology includes a 10.2-inch fully digital instrument panel and a 9-inch multimedia center, both with intuitive interfaces and wireless connectivity for smartphones.

The sound experience was entrusted to Bose, which developed a 12-speaker system specifically tuned to the cabin’s acoustics, ensuring sound clarity even at high speeds. In terms of safety, the driving assistance package is complete, including adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking and lane keeping assistant. Esses systems have been calibrated to act in a less intrusive way, allowing the driver to maintain control and the pleasure of driving, intervening only when strictly necessary to avoid accidents.

Historical context and market

The trajectory of this model in the Brasil dates back to the beginning of the opening of imports in the 90s, when the fourth generation arrived in the country in 1992 and quickly became a symbol of status and advanced technology. Durante that decade, the vehicle introduced innovations such as four-wheel steering, something revolutionary for the time, and won a legion of fans until the end of its global production in 2001. The return now seeks to capitalize on this affective memory, positioning the car as an emotional and rational choice simultaneously.

With an estimated price of between R$420,000 and R$450,000, the coupe will have the mission of facing strong rivals in the premium segment, such as the Audi A3 and the BMW Série 2 Gran Coupé. The competitive advantage lies in the reliability of Japanese engineering and the efficiency of the hybrid system, which promises lower maintenance and fueling costs than pure combustion or mild hybrid competitors. Adapting the engine to accept Brazilian gasoline, which has a high ethanol blend, was a crucial point in development to ensure long-term durability.
