The origin of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, originally released in 2023, is directly linked to a series of technical experiments carried out by Durante the post-development period of Breath of the Wild, the team led by director Hidemaro Fujibayashi began testing new physical interactions within the same graphics engine, seeking to expand the gameplay possibilities. The results of these tests revealed creative potential that went beyond the limitations of simple additional downloadable content (DLC).

The developers used existing tools to create rudimentary prototypes of vehicles and weaponry, combining objects from the scene in ways not foreseen in the original game. Entre The initial creations included motorized tanks made with gears and boards, as well as improvised cannons that used remote bombs to fire projectiles. Embryonic Essas mechanics served as the basis for the complex building systems, such as the Ultrahand ability, that became the core of the sequence.

The need for a complete new title became evident when the team realized that the new ideas required a restructuring of the world of Hyrule. To accommodate the freedom of construction and planned verticality, the map needed to be expanded drastically, adding floating islands in the sky and a vast underground layer. Essa technical and geographical complexity made the expansion format unfeasible, consolidating the decision to produce an independent game that made the most of the new physics.

Internal tests defined the direction of the franchise

During the experimental phase, the Nintendo EPD team focused on validating whether the Nintendo Switch hardware would support the advanced physical interactions envisioned by the designers. One of the most significant tests involved joining four wooden planks together to form a tube, which acted as a mortar when interacting with the game’s bombs. Validating these concepts proved that the game engine’s “chemistry” allowed for systemic creativity far beyond basic exploration.

Hidemaro The continuity of the development environment allowed the team to save time, avoiding creating assets from scratch and focusing on refining the fusion and construction mechanics. Producer Eiji Aonuma supported the strategy of maintaining the familiar topography of Hyrule, overlaying it with unprecedented layers of vertical exploration.

The implementation of these mechanics resulted in a paradigm shift for the series, encouraging players to solve puzzles through creative engineering. The fluid transition between the sky, surface and underground required optimizations that would only be possible in dedicated software, ensuring that the experience of flying or diving between levels was cohesive and technically stable.

Sales numbers and optimization for new consoles

The commercial success of the franchise confirmed the success of Nintendo’s strategy in transforming experiments into a complete product. Dados accumulated by the end of 2025 indicates that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has surpassed the mark of 35 million units sold globally. Seu’s successor, Tears of the Kingdom, also showed robust performance, reaching 22.4 million copies in the same period, driven by positive critical reception and the console’s installed base.

The longevity of the titles was extended with the arrival of editions optimized for the hybrid console’s successor, popularly referred to as Switch 2. The new versions of the games offer significant technical improvements:

– Taxa de quadros estável em 60 fps, proporcionando maior fluidez nos combates e na exploração.

– Resoluções higher resolutions and HDR support, which revitalize the artistic look of Hyrule.

– Reduced load times Tempos, facilitating quick transition between map layers.

The gaming community remains active in 2026, exploring the endless possibilities of the building system to create complex vehicles such as planes and autonomous robots. The freedom offered by physics tools continues to generate viral content on the internet, maintaining engagement with the series years after its original release. Nintendo continues to monitor these community creations as a source of inspiration for future innovations in the saga.
