The Pokémon Company has officially returned two of the franchise’s most influential titles to the Nintendo hybrid console, marking a new stage in the preservation of its classic library. The digital versions of Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen will be available for purchase on the eShop starting this Friday, February 27th, a date celebrated globally as Pokémon Day.

Unlike previous releases that integrated the subscription service, these games will be sold individually in the digital store. The suggested retail price for each version is US$19.99, allowing players to choose their preferred adventure in the Kanto region without requiring an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

The announcement occurred shortly after the broadcast of Pokémon Presents, confirming rumors circulating in the community about the expansion of the Game Boy Advance catalog on current hardware. The initiative aims to connect both veterans who played the original 2004 versions and new trainers who want to explore the origins of the first-generation remakes.

Modernization of the classic experience

While maintaining the aesthetics and gameplay that defined the Game Boy Advance era, the new versions for Switch bring significant technical improvements to adapt the experience to current standards. The main highlight is the simulation of connectivity via local wireless communication, which replaces the physical need for the old Cabo Link for exchanges and battles.

The developers have implemented features that ensure a smooth transition to modern hardware while maintaining the integrity of the original mechanics. Entre the features confirmed for launch include:

  • Full support for the Joy-Con and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller controllers.
  • Ability to perform Pokémon exchanges and battles between two Switch consoles via local wireless connection.
  • Preservation of original content, requiring changes between versions to complete Pokédex, as in cartridge games.
  • Absence of region blocking, allowing the purchase of versions in different languages (English, French, Spanish) according to the user’s preference.

Integration with services and soundtrack

A crucial point for collectors is confirmation of compatibility with Pokémon Home. The Pokémon Company has assured that a future update will allow creatures captured in FireRed and LeafGreen to be sent to the cloud storage system, ensuring that the monsters can be transferred to the latest games in the franchise.

In addition to the gameplay, the nostalgic atmosphere is reinforced by integration with the Nintendo Music application. Coincidindo with the release of the games, the complete soundtrack for both versions was added to the service’s library. Subscribers will be able to listen to Kanto’s classic compositions directly on their mobile devices, with extended playback options for city- and route-specific tracks.

The launch strategy reflects a robust commercial movement, positioning the titles at the top of eShop wish lists even before the download is released. By offering the games as one-time purchases rather than tying them exclusively to Pacote of Expansão,
