Sport Club Corinthians Paulista and Portuguese coach Information about the settlement, which ends the litigation that began at the end of 2022, was presented by the technician himself to Poder Judiciário of São Paulo, in a process that is being processed under secrecy. The initiative seeks to reverse a previous decision that condemned Pereira to pay legal fees.

The legal dispute began when Vitor Pereira left the São Paulo club at the end of 2022 and, shortly afterwards, took over technical command of Flamengo, generating dissatisfaction among fans and the Corinthians board at the time. The financial imbroglio involved both labor issues and convictions in higher courts, such as Corte Arbitral of Esporte (CAS).

Conflict details and initial values

The core of the legal dispute between the club and the coach revolved around divergent values that both claimed they had a right or duty to. Inicialmente, Vitor Pereira claimed from Justiça the receipt of around R$ 7.5 million from

On the other hand, Corinthians had been ordered by CAS, in Suíça, to pay the Portuguese an amount of R$2.8 million. Essa condenação internacional adicionava complexidade ao cenário, somando-se às discussões sobre Fundo de Garantia do Tempo de Serviço (FGTS) e outras verbas.

Signature and terms of commitment

The agreement that aims to put an end to the fight at Justiça was formalized at the end of 2024, with the signature of the then president of Corinthians, Augusto Melo, and the coach himself. Este document established a total amount of 820 thousand euros, which is equivalent to approximately R$5 million at the current exchange rate, to be paid in installments.

The commitment details the conditions and deadlines for making payments, seeking to regularize the financial situation between the parties. The initiative represents an important step for both, allowing the club to organize its finances and the coach to free himself from past issues.

Installment of agreed amounts

The agreement document established a detailed schedule for the payment of the 820 thousand euros owed to the coach. Corinthians committed to making the first payment of 205 thousand euros at the end of 2024, demonstrating a beginning of compliance even during the previous administration.

Subsequent payments were scheduled for 2025, with installments of 164 thousand euros in March and another in September. A new installment of 164 thousand euros was recently paid, and the last part of the amount, worth 123 thousand euros, is scheduled to be paid in September this year.

Debt composition and previous decisions

The composition of the agreed R$5 million encompasses different types of debts. A significant part of this amount refers to pending FGTS, a fundamental labor right for the coach.

Furthermore, the agreement includes the conviction suffered by Corinthians in Corte Arbitral of Esporte (CAS), in Essa decision by the international sports body was a crucial point in the negotiations, highlighting the need for a comprehensive resolution to the case. The parties sought, with this instrument, to consolidate all outstanding obligations.

Waiver Clauses and Future Legal Agreements

The instrument of agreement sealed between Corinthians and Vitor Pereira is not limited to just stipulating payments. Nele, it was expressly agreed that the Portuguese coach would waive other amounts that he might request. Essa clause aims to guarantee full and definitive settlement of all financial obligations arising from your period at the club. In return, Corinthians undertook to bear the legal costs related to the case that was being processed by Justiça of Trabalho, alleviating this expense for the coach. Adicionalmente, the document establishes a clear guideline for any future disagreements: they must be discussed and resolved again before the CAS, reinforcing the preference for an international arbitration body for any new contractual disputes.

Initial rejection and new argument

Despite the conclusion of the agreement between the parties, a previous decision by the São Paulo court, handed down at the end of last year, rejected a petition from Vitor Pereira. Essa petition sought for the club to pay the legal fees in question.

Therefore, the coach attached the recently signed agreement to the process, as new evidence, in an attempt to overturn the court decision that condemned him to pay the fees. The legal strategy aims to demonstrate that the new pact between him and Corinthians fundamentally changes the original sentencing scenario.

Positioning of the parties involved

Vitor Pereira’s lawyers spoke out, declaring that the payment agreement signed with Corinthians represents full recognition of the amounts owed to their client. Segundo them, the club expressly and irrevocably assumed responsibility for paying the default fees arbitrated in the process, as well as the procedural costs. Eles argue that this agreement has already been concluded, signed and executed in part, configuring a supervening procedural fact that directly impacts the validity and usefulness of the sentence imposed on Vitor Pereira in relation to the honorary amount.

Even with the presentation of the agreement and the lawyers’ arguments, the São Paulo court, in principle, did not reverse the initial order for the coach to pay the amounts determined by court. The legal situation, therefore, still awaits further developments. The press sought out Vitor Pereira to comment on the information, but he did not respond. Corinthians, in turn, when asked about the regularity of payments, informed that he would not comment on the agreement. The report found, however, that the club is in dialogue with the Portuguese coach’s lawyers to manage the situation and ensure compliance with the terms of the agreement.

Overview of football disputes

Football, being an industry with high investment and complex contracts, is often faced with legal disputes between clubs and professionals. Casos, like Corinthians and Vitor Pereira, are not isolated and highlight the need for clarity in negotiations and contractual terminations to avoid long and costly litigation.

The presence of instances such as Corte Arbitral of Esporte (CAS) highlights the global dimension of these relationships and the search for impartial resolutions. The agreement in question, despite having arrived late, offers a solution to a situation that could have even greater financial and image impacts for both parties.
