The Mercedes-Benz stadium of Atlanta received an exception from Outros NFL stadiums hosting tournament games will need to hide or cover their roof markings to comply with Fifa trademark protection rules.

Fifa requirements dictate that all Mundial locations be free of any pre-existing advertising or commercial identification. Essa standard also extends to logos facing the sky that appear in aerial images or broadcasts. The objective is to protect the exclusive rights of the event’s official sponsors.

Full brand cleaning requirement affects multiple NFL stadiums

Several American stadiums face the challenge of removing or hiding large logos installed on the roof. Fifa applies the clean venue principle set out in contracts signed with venues in the last decade.

In Atlanta, the retractable roof panels receive the Mercedes-Benz emblem in eight interlocking pieces. Cada one weighs 500 tons and measures 220 feet long. Officials evaluated options such as applying vinyl graphics over the inflatable ETFE material, but concluded that any intervention could cause costly structural damage.

Fifa accepted the technical impossibility after a long dialogue. The entity reported that it works with local authorities considering the unique characteristics of each infrastructure.

Technical details of the roof complicate any intervention

The roof of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium is inspired by the oculus of the Roman Panteão and closes in a spiral. Seus ETFE panels form a malleable surface that inflates with air, which increases the risk of tearing or compromising the system during roofing attempts.

Adam Fullerton, vice president of stadium operations, mentioned in previous interviews that the roof represented the main concern in the retrofit process. Ele highlighted that the site plans to install a natural lawn in place of the artificial lawn, in addition to covering more than 2,000 internal and external signage elements.

Even with the exception on the roof, the stadium will only be called Atlanta Stadium during the tournament. The same rule applies to other venues, such as MetLife’s Stadium, which becomes New York New Jersey Stadium, and Levi’s Stadium, rebranded as San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.

Other stadiums are still looking for solutions for ceiling markings

Stadiums such as Hard Rock Stadium at Miami, Lumen Field at Seattle, AT&T Stadium at Dallas, NRG Stadium at In some cases, the marks are on partial parts of the roof or next to solar panels.

The operators of these locations have confirmed the need to hide the logos, but have not yet detailed the exact methods. Em Seattle, for example, the solution will be professional and avoid improvisations like tarps. Em Houston, the logo appears on the “eyelids” of the retractable roof.

Fifa avoided commenting on specific agreements for each stadium. The entity reinforced that it seeks to implement the rules in a manner consistent with previous editions, always respecting operational particularities.

Atlanta will host eight games including the World Cup semi-final

The Mercedes-Benz Stadium is scheduled to host eight matches from the Copa of the Mundo in 2026, including a semifinal. The city of Atlanta was confirmed as one of the venues in 2022 and is preparing several adjustments for the event.

In addition to changing the lawn and removing internal marks, the venue already hosted Club World Cup last year under different rental rules. Para o Mundial da Fifa, the detailed contract requires complete removal of any unauthorized commercial identification.

The exception granted to the roof avoids potential financial and structural losses that could compromise the use of the stadium for other events after the tournament.

Adaptation process is ongoing at all venues

American stadiums often remove some of the signage for occasional events, but rarely change the official name or markings on the roof. Preparing for 2026 required more extensive planning because of the international scale.

In Atlanta, conversations about the roof began almost two years ago. The final solution preserves the integrity of the structure while meeting the spirit of the Fifa rules to the greatest extent possible.

Other places continue to work out how to hide their brands without affecting the appearance or functionality of the spaces.

  • Removal of more than 2 thousand internal and external branding elements
  • Installation of natural lawn in the countryside
  • Temporary renaming of the stadium to Atlanta Stadium
  • Maintenance of the original roof with logo visible only from the air

Fifa remains in contact with the host cities to finalize all necessary adjustments before the start of the competition.

Detailed contract defines branding rules for the event

The agreements signed with the stadiums include specific clauses regarding the absence of advertising in stands, scoreboards, uniforms and surrounding areas. The ban also affects the airspace above the site.

This requirement reflects Fifa’s brand protection policy, which prioritizes official sponsors such as mobility partners Hyundai and Kia. The Mercedes-Benz logo on the roof of Atlanta creates direct conflict with this orientation.

Despite the exceptional agreement, the stadium will maintain all other planned adjustments. The decision balances technical demands with the needs of the tournament.

  • Retractable panels of 500 tons each
  • ETFE material inflatable with air
  • Design in eight interconnected petals
  • Closure inspired by the Roman Panteão

Preparations continue apace at all 11 NFL stadiums involved in Copa of Mundo 2026.
