União Europeia defined a new regulatory framework that profoundly changes the manufacturing and life cycle of consumer electronics. From February 18, 2027, article 11 of Regulamento (EU) 2023/1542 comes into force, which requires integrated portable batteries to be easily replaceable by the user. The central objective is to extend the durability of products and facilitate home repair processes.

The change does not mean an immediate return to old designs with plastic snap-on lids. Manufacturers must design components so that removal occurs without the need for specialized technical assistance or harsh chemical solvents. Para smartphones and tablets rules follow a specific schedule under the Ecodesign regulation, balancing ease of switching with water and dust resistance requirements.

Dispositivos affected by battery regulation standards

The scope of the new European legislation covers a wide range of technological equipment that currently has sealed batteries. Enquanto cell phones have their own regulatory path, other daily use gadgets will need complete readjustment in their hardware designs. The rule focuses on the mechanical accessibility of the energy component.

The main products affected by the obligation include:

  • Computadores portables and laptops of various sizes.
  • Fones wireless earbuds and true wireless (TWS) type models.
  • Relógios smart, smartwatches and fitness monitoring bracelets.
  • Consoles handheld video games and remote controls.
  • Caixas sound system with Bluetooth connection and digital book readers (e-readers).
  • Óculos smart and augmented reality devices.

Diferenças regulations between smartphones and other electronics

Existe an important technical distinction between how a cell phone will be treated in relation to a notebook. Para smartphones and tablets with screens between 7 and 17.4 inches, Regulamento (EU) 2023/1670 prevails, focused on Ecodesign. Esta standard has already introduced mandatory energy efficiency labels and imposes rules on the availability of spare parts for extended periods.

Nestes In specific cases, manufacturers are not required to create direct access via an external port. Entretanto, the battery cannot be fixed with permanent industrial glues that require professional tools to remove. The project must allow a common consumer to perform the replacement using conventional screwdrivers or simple opening methods, ensuring that the device is not discarded prematurely due to power failure.

Common Home Maintenance Tools Exigência

The text of article 11 is strict regarding the method of removing the energy source. Legislation determines that the battery must be removable using commercially available tools in basic maintenance kits. Isso prohibits the use of proprietary screws that require exclusive brand keys, making it difficult for authorized networks to monopolize repairs.

The technology industry will have just under a year to adjust global assembly lines to these requirements, as the European market dictates global design trends. The trend is for brands to adopt universal fixing standards to avoid the logistical costs of producing different versions for each continent. Analistas indicate that sealing against liquids will continue to be a technical challenge for engineers, but the right to repair prevails as a legislative priority in the bloc.
