Sony implements mandatory online verification every 30 days on PS5 digital games
Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed a significant change to the PlayStation 5’s digital protection policy. Starting in March 2026, all games purchased digitally after that date will require periodic online verification to work. The console will need to connect to the internet at least once every 30 days.
The company reinforced that the measure is intentional and not an error. Segundo the support message released, if the console remains disconnected for more than 30 days, the titles will stop starting automatically. Functionality will be restored once the network connection is re-established.
Funcionamento of the new license system
The mechanism works as an expiration timer. Títulos purchased before the March update will not change and will continue to operate normally, even without frequent connection. Apenas purchases made after this date will be subject to mandatory verification.
Sony clarified that the 30-day period does not represent an account restriction or system failure. It is simply an expiration date for the digital license. Definir a console as “main” also does not get around this requirement. The timer works regardless of the device configuration.
Impacto in users with limited internet
The change mainly affects two groups of players:
- Usuários with unstable internet access needing long offline sessions
- Proprietários that often remain offline for prolonged periods
- Viajantes playing in regions with poor connectivity
- Famílias with monthly shared data limit
Diferente of games on physical media or titles purchased before March, new digital titles will operate under a recurring verification model. Esse system brings the PS5 closer to common practices in digital PC and cell phone stores, where licenses require periodic validation.
Diferença between old and new content
Jogadores who already have a sizable library on PS5 will not face immediate changes. The restriction applies exclusively to future purchases. Essa approach allows Sony to implement policy without retroactively affecting the experience of existing users, reducing the potential for backlash.
Títulos purchased before the update retains its offline operation without limitations. The company thus created two license regimes simultaneously: the old one, unrestricted, and the new one, with mandatory verification. A user may have part of their library free from this requirement and another part subject to it.
Corporate Decision Contexto
Após weeks of speculation and leaks, official confirmation arrives amid debates about digital property and consumer rights. The measure reflects global industry trends to create systems that guarantee license authenticity and reduce piracy. Competidores like Microsoft and PC game developers have been adopting similar models for years.
Sony maintains the stance that the change aims to protect the rights of content creators. Digital Plataformas faces constant pressure to implement checks that prevent unauthorized sharing and copyright infringement.
