Seis titles will leave the PlayStation digital store over the next two months. Entre they are Battlefield Hardline and Horizon Chase Turbo, two of the most well-known names on the exclusion list. Sony follows its common practice of discontinuing games as distribution contracts expire or online servers become unsustainable.
The months of May and June usually bring big announcements in the industry. Este year, however, also marks the end of a series of productions on the platform. Quem already has these titles in its library and will be able to continue playing, but new buyers will not find the games available for purchase.
Quais games will be removed
- Pinball FX3 (PS4): will be hidden in May, keeping DLCs on sale for those who already own
- Rec Room (PS4/PS5): in-game purchases disabled on May 1st; Servers shut down on June 1st
- Battlefield Hardline (PS4): removed from PS Store on May 22; servers offline on June 22
- Pinball FX (PS4): Support ends June 1st
- Pinball M (PS4): Support ends June 1st
- Horizon Chase Turbo (PS4): removed from PS Store on June 1st
Diferenças in the treatment of each title
Pinball FX3 receives a special type of deprecation. Instead of being completely deleted, the game will just be hidden from search results and storefronts. Quem already has it and you will be able to play normally and even purchase additional DLCs. Novos users, however, will not be able to find it for initial purchase. It’s an intermediate solution that keeps the existing community active without attracting new customers.
The PS4 versions of Pinball FX and Pinball M follow a different path. Continuarão listed in the store, but without receiving updates or new content as of June 1st. The PS5 versions of these titles are unchanged. Este is the default model when Sony decides to end active support for a game. Users maintain access to what they have already purchased, but the developer stops investing in improvements.
Rec Room presents a two-phase schedule. Primeiro, in-game purchases (cosmetics, special items, season passes) will be blocked on May 1st. The multiplayer server continues to run for another month. On June 1st, the online service is completely shut down. Títulos free-to-play games tend to follow this pattern: monetization ends before the server.
The highlights of the removal
Battlefield Hardline is the most impactful name on the list. Lançado in 2015 as a spin-off of the Battlefield series, the game lost playerbase significantly on PS4 after the release of newer versions. The removal on May 22 marks the official closure. The servers will stay online for another month (until June 22nd), giving remaining players time to farewell. The PS3 version has been offline for some time.
Horizon Chase Turbo touched many Brazilians. The title pays homage to Ayrton Senna, with exclusive edition “Senna Para Sempre” included in the removal. Mesmo after leaving the store, whoever purchased it will continue to have full access. The game is an arcade racing game from an isometric perspective that has gained a loyal following among fans of retro racing games. Sua’s output reflects the reality of many indie titles: they experience shorter marketing cycles than AAA productions.
Why games leave digital stores
The discontinuation follows the standard established by the industry. Contratos distribution often has finite deadlines, especially with licensed music (Horizon Chase Turbo) or film content. Quando rights expire, keeping the game for sale becomes legally complicated. Servidores multiplayer also generates ongoing costs. Quando user base falls below a viable limit, publishers decide to shut down the machines.
Sony differentiates its treatment on a case-by-case basis. Alguns titles receive obfuscation (Pinball FX3), others end of support (Pinball FX), others complete removal (Battlefield Hardline). Essa flexibility respects different contexts: single-player games can leave the store but remain playable indefinitely. Títulos multiplayer requires synchronization with servers, making it impossible to play offline after shutdown.
Standard Recomendação: anyone interested in these games should purchase them in May or the first few days of June, depending on specific deadlines. Após deadlines, access will be restricted to those who already have a digital license.
