Filipe Toledo begins the search for his third trophy on the Gold Coast waves, on Austrália, this Thursday. The competition marks the conclusion of the Australian leg of Circuito Mundial of Surfe (WSL). The Brazilian arrives at the event with the status of current champion and a favorable record on the right of Snapper Rocks and Burleigh Heads. The dispute window remains open until May 10th.

Toledo’s performance in the region is marked by top scores. In two victorious editions, the surfer from São Paulo recorded 10 scores, consolidating his style based on aerials and progressive maneuvers. Expectations for this stage are high, as Brasil currently dominates four of the top five positions in the men’s world rankings. Gabriel Medina leads the overall standings after returning to the top of the table after four seasons.

Histórico of achievements and top marks on Austrália

Toledo’s journey to Gold Coast began to gain global prominence in 2015. Naquela, at the age of 18, overcame the Australian Julian Wilson in the decision. The final heat was marked by a technical performance that earned the Brazilian a score of 10 and another 9.60. Esse result was the first major milestone in his career towards the world titles that would come later.

Dez years after his first triumph, the two-time world champion repeated the feat by winning the 2025 stage. The path to the final included another 10, obtained during the semifinal against his compatriot Alejo Muniz. In the decider, he faced Julian Wilson again to lift his second trophy at the venue. Agora, in 2026, the focus is on equaling historic marks of consecutive victories on Australian soil.

Brazilian Hegemonia in the 2026 world ranking

Brasil is experiencing a moment of vast technical superiority on the professional surfing circuit. Além from the isolated leadership of Gabriel Medina, the national team has three other representatives in the elite squad. The scenario shows a Brazilian “bubble” that makes it difficult for foreign competitors to advance in the final stages.

The main names in the country in the current ranking are:

  • Gabriel Medina: 1st place and leader of the season.
  • Miguel Pupo: joins the group of the five best.
  • Yago Dora: highlighted by consistency in edge maneuvers.
  • Samuel Pupo: completes the list of four Brazilians in the top 5.
  • Luana Silva: occupies 4th position in the world female ranking.

The only international surfer to break the Brazilian streak at the top is Australian George Pittar. Ele occupies second place overall after winning the previous stage, held in Margaret River. Entre the women, Luana Silva climbed the rankings after reaching the final in Margaret River, where she was surpassed by the American Lakey Peterson.

Janela competition and sea conditions

The WSL organization monitors wave conditions to authorize the start of heats. Gold Coast’s time zone is 13 hours ahead of Brasília’s time. Isso means that official calls usually happen during the night on Brasil, corresponding to the next morning on Austrália.

Gold Coast’s rights are known for offering long sessions that allow for multiple maneuvers. Para Toledo, this type of formation favors speed surfing and quick transitions that tend to impress the judges. Brasil already has five titles in this specific stage of the world calendar, including victories by Jacqueline Silva, Gabriel Medina and Ítalo Ferreira in alternate years.

The heat draw indicates intense clashes in the early stages. Gabriel Medina could cross paths with Filipe Toledo in the round of 16, depending on the results of the opening rounds. Essa the possibility of a direct duel between the two main names in the country could drastically change the configuration of the world ranking at the end of the Australian leg.
