Unknown Worlds, a studio known for its underwater exploration games, has confirmed the release of Subnautica 2 in Acesso Antecipado on the Steam platform. The long-awaited sequel will be available to players from May 14th. Essa’s initial approach follows a tradition from the developer, which has historically used community feedback to improve its titles before the official release of version 1.0.

The decision reflects the development methodology of Unknown Worlds, which has already successfully applied the model to its predecessors, Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero. The goal is to involve players from the early stages of the project, allowing their suggestions and experiences to shape the game’s evolution. Publisher Krafton and the studio hope to repeat the success of previous titles, which have enjoyed long runs from Acesso Antecipado.

Tradição from Acesso Antecipado to Unknown Worlds

The practice of releasing games on Acesso Antecipado is deeply rooted in Unknown Worlds’s culture, as game design lead Anthony Gallegos highlighted. Segundo, the approach is part of the studio’s DNA. The first Subnautica, for example, was made available in Acesso Antecipado in 2014 and remained in that phase for four years, until its official launch in 2018. Da similarly, the spin-off Subnautica: Below Zero also spent a few years in Acesso Antecipado before its version 1.0 arrived in 2021.

Scott MacDonald, creative media producer at Unknown Worlds, who has followed the development of all games in the series, emphasizes the success of this strategy. “We’ve been more successful the earlier we release something, because we’ve been able to figure out what players really care about,” MacDonald explained. Ele reinforced that, although the team makes its best estimates, the public’s reaction is crucial to identifying the elements that most captivate, such as the type of marine fauna preferred by fans.

Comunidade shapes game development

The influence of the gaming community has been a decisive factor in the evolution of the Subnautica franchise. MacDonald recalled the case of the Aurora ship, in the original game, which was initially just a decorative setting. However, players’ strong interest in exploring its interiors led Unknown Worlds to develop a complex and gigantic experience inside and outside the ship’s structure.

Anthony Gallegos also cited the studio’s co-founder, Charlie Cleveland, who often mentioned the initial absence of food and water resources in Subnautica. Tais elements, which have become fundamental in the survival simulator genre, were later included due to player demand. “The community helped direct the essence of the franchise, making it a survival game,” said Gallegos. Ele considers this to be one of the best examples of collaboration between developers and the public.

In the case of Subnautica: Below Zero, the narrative was one of the points most shaped by player feedback during Acesso Antecipado. MacDonald revealed that the original story was not well received, which led to a significant rework. Unknown Worlds constantly monitors Discord’s social media and communities, noting the most vocal comments to align fans’ expectations with the studio’s vision, always maintaining the final creative direction.

Desafios on managing fan expectations

Apesar benefits from Acesso Antecipado, Unknown Worlds recognizes the challenges inherent in managing player expectations. Anthony Gallegos described the task as “impossible to get completely right”, as there will always be a group of consumers who prefer to wait for the final version of a game. Muitos players purchase titles on platforms like Steam only when they are complete, avoiding products in development.

Scott MacDonald pointed out that most players of the original Subnautica started playing after version 1.0 was released. Isso imposes on the Subnautica 2 team the need to clearly communicate that the new title will be at its earliest access point. The franchise has grown in popularity, and the team needs to ensure that new fans understand the nature of Acesso Antecipado, which implies a game that is not yet fully finished.

“How can we communicate to players that the game isn’t completely finished yet, but that it’s good enough that they can enjoy it for several hours?” asked MacDonald. Ele emphasized the importance of being transparent with players, keeping them informed about the development process. Essa direct communication is crucial to building an engaged and understanding fan base.

Período from Acesso Antecipado and next steps

Developers estimate that Subnautica 2 will remain in Acesso Antecipado for a period of two to three years. Durante At this stage, the team promises to release periodic updates. Essas updates will include both significant gameplay changes and bug fixes based on feedback and project evolution.

Subnautica 2’s transition from Acesso Antecipado to version 1.0 will occur when the game’s main narrative is complete. “When we’ve given you the chance to complete the game,” Gallegos explained, “which doesn’t necessarily mean it will be the end of your experience with the game, but rather the time to finalize the narrative we wanted to tell.” MacDonald added, stating that the goal is for players to be able to “play, finish, uninstall, and think, ‘I got my Subnautica 2 experience.'”
