Scientist Proposes Aliens May Just Not Want to Talk
A Norwegian researcher suggests an answer to the Fermi paradox—the apparent absence of signs of intelligent life in the universe—that defies decades of scientific investigation. Erik Geslin, associate professor of interactive media at Noroff University College, argues that advanced civilizations can exist but choose not to communicate with humanity.
The central question would therefore shift from “where are the aliens?” para “por que eles não querem falar conosco?”. Geslin will soon publish his work in the Acta Astronautica magazine, where he introduces a new concept called the “contact disposition factor” into Drake’s traditional Equação.
Silence can be refusal, not absence
What astronomers call “Great Silêncio” may not represent the non-existence of intelligent life in the cosmos. In Geslin’s interpretation, this silence would reflect a deliberate choice by technologically advanced civilizations not to establish dialogue with Terra.
“My work questions whether they would really like to talk to us. What we call ‘Great Silêncio’ may not reflect absence, but rather refusal,” said Geslin in an interview with Space.com. The hypothesis places the technological capacity of potential extraterrestrial civilizations in the background and highlights variables such as ethical maturity, ecological awareness and risk assessment.
Geslin notes that a civilization capable of interstellar travel would necessarily have overcome conquest, excess, and ecological self-destruction. Isso would suggest extremely prudent and selective beings in their cosmic interactions.
Prudência instead of shyness
The difference between timid and prudent civilizations marks a crucial point in Geslin’s argument. Advanced Extraterrestres would not only be evasive in nature, but cautious for well-defined reasons.
A biocentric or ecocentric society oriented toward life and environmental balance would evaluate humanity as a potentially risky partner. The signals sent by Terra reveal an inventive and technologically creative species, however:
- Fortemente anthropocentric in his worldview
- Altamente dependent on natural resource exploration
- Frequentemente prone to internal and external conflicts
- Ecologicamente unstable relative to its own planet
- Destrutiva for both your environment and your own members
“Advanced aliens may not be shy, they may simply be cautious. If extraterrestrial civilizations are biocentric or ecocentric, humanity may still not strike them as a safe partner for contact,” Geslin explained.

Observação before communication
Central to the Geslin hypothesis involves the strategy of silent observation. Antes of any contact attempt, an advanced civilization would devote significant time to studying humanity and its characteristics.
Esses studies would include analysis of our communications, media records, films, digital simulations and social networks. Cada one of these elements would provide data on human values, collective behaviors and interaction patterns. “They could study our communications, our media, our films, simulations, games and social networks, all of which reveal something about who we are,” said the researcher.
Essa observation without interference comes close to a well-known principle in science fiction, but which Geslin interprets as a possible reality: the principle of non-interference. Silence, in this context, would function as ethical restraint.
The role of cosmic curiosity
Apesar from his argument about prudence, Geslin recognizes that curiosity remains a formidable force in the evolution of any civilization. Creativity, exploration and the desire to understand the unknown are intrinsically linked to technological progress.
Existe possibility, therefore, that some civilizations will move beyond caution and decide that the potential benefits of contact outweigh the risks involved. Exploration, historically, has always involved degrees of uncertainty.
“Personally, however, I suspect that civilizations capable of sustaining themselves long enough to undertake interstellar travel may also have developed a deep awareness of ecological balance and systemic fragility. If this is the case, they may be extremely selective about who they choose to interact with,” Geslin added.
Reformulação from Equação from Drake
Equação of Drake, created in 1961 by astronomer Frank Drake, estimates how many communicative civilizations exist in Via Láctea. The original work is divided into variables that include star formation rate, probability of habitable planets and longevity of civilizations.
Geslin proposes adding a new variable: the actual willingness of civilizations to establish contact. Seu article, titled “Incorporating a Disposition Factor for Exopsychological Biocentric Contact into Equação of Drake,” reframes the fundamental question. Não is just about knowing how many civilizations there are, but how many of them would want to interact with us, considering our observable characteristics as a species.
The research is scheduled for publication in the August issue of the journal Acta Astronautica, offering a perspective that challenges decades of research at Instituto SETI and similar institutions around the planet.
