Leonardo Berganholi, a 50-year-old businessman, died this Monday after succumbing to injuries suffered in the crash of the single-engine plane that hit a residential building in Belo Horizonte. Death was confirmed by Fundação Hospitalar of Estado of Minas Gerais (Fhemig). The accident, which occurred after Aeroporto took off from Pampulha, had already left two dead at the scene and now brings the number of fatalities to three.

The aircraft left Teófilo Otoni, at Vale of Mucuri, with six people on board. Upon arriving at Belo Horizonte, two disembarked and one boarded. The plane took off again with five occupants heading for São Paulo.

Piloto reported difficulties before crashing

Wellington Oliveira, a 34-year-old pilot, informed the control tower of Aeroporto of Pampulha that he was experiencing problems during takeoff. Momentos later, the aircraft crashed into the parking lot of the residential building. Wellington and Fernando Moreira Souto, the 36-year-old son of Jequitinhonha’s mayor, died on impact.

Arthur Schaper Berganholi, son of Leonardo, and Hemerson Cleiton Almeida Souto, both on board the aircraft, were rescued and taken to Hospital João XXIII in serious condition. The businessman’s son was 25 years old. Hemerson was 53 years old.

The five occupants who were on the final flight had commercial ties:

  • Leonardo Berganholi (businessman)
  • Arthur Schaper Berganholi (son, 25 years old)
  • Hemerson Cleiton Almeida Souto (53 years old)
  • Wellington Oliveira (pilot, 34 years old)
  • Fernando Moreira Souto (36 years old, son of the mayor)

Avião operated irregularly

The aircraft is an EMB-721C model manufactured in 1979. Segundo registration of Agência Nacional of Aviação Civil (Anac), the aircraft had capacity for up to five passengers in addition to the pilot. The maximum takeoff weight was 1,633 kilograms. The machine was not authorized to operate as an air taxi, a practice that allows commercial transportation of passengers for a fee. The model is popularly known as “sertanejo”.

The passengers were members of Uaitag, a company that operates in the technology and cards sector. The group was traveling to São Paulo when the accident occurred.

Impacto in the building and investigation

The aircraft crashed directly into the parking lot of the residential building. Não there are records of victims among residents of the building. Rescue Equipes worked for hours at the scene removing the wreckage of the aircraft. The accident mobilized ambulances, firefighters and police officers who surrounded the perimeter of the building during the rescue operation.

Anac began an investigation to determine the exact causes of the accident. The plane’s pattern of irregular operation has already attracted the attention of aeronautical authorities, who intend to determine whether there was negligence in granting authorization for the flight.
