Brady Ebert, co-founder and former guitarist of the rock band Turnstile, was indicted by a Montgomery County grand jury on charges of attempted first-degree murder.

The crime carries a potential penalty of life in prison. The indictment follows his arrest in March on initial charges of attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault.

Incidente that led to the indictment

On March 29, Ebert went to the home of 79-year-old William Yates, Silver Spring, Maryland. Ele intentionally ran over Yates with his car after shouting obscenities and honking at the elderly man and other family members. The action took place without prior warning. Conforme registered by Montgomery county police, the incident was witnessed by family members who were close to the scene.

William Yates is the father of Brendan Yates, former bandmate of Ebert in Turnstile. The relationship between the two musicians had deteriorated over the months prior to the incident, with tensions rising that culminated in the run-over.

Defesa and Ebert allegations

Ebert maintains he is innocent of the charges. In testimony to a district court commissioner, he stated, “This was pure self-defense. Eles are the aggressors.” Sua defense strategy is based on the claim that he acted in personal protection in the face of a threat.

Apesar this dispute, the authorities continue with the criminal case, based on evidence collected at the scene and testimonies from witnesses who were present at the time of the collision. The case remains in court with a scheduling hearing date scheduled for May 8.

Histórico of Ebert in band Turnstile

Ebert co-founded Turnstile in 2010 and remained with the group for 12 years. The split occurred in 2022, when the band removed him for a “consistent pattern of harmful behavior affecting himself, the band and the community”. Essa’s decision signaled growing internal disagreements.

Após left Turnstile, Ebert tried to start a new music career. In early 2025, he joined the band The SET. Contudo was fired weeks later, in the context of public accusations he made against Turnstile on social media. Ebert alleged that the band had misused funds from charity shows, among other administrative irregularities.

Situação procedural and arrest

Ebert is currently being held at Centro Correcional’s Condado’s Montgomery without bail. Sua preventive detention remains in place while the process progresses. The next court appearance is scheduled for May 8, when a scheduling hearing will be held to define the next steps in the procedure.

Prosecutors used the seriousness of the initial charges as justification for pretrial detention. The indictment for attempted first-degree murder strengthens the case and exposes Ebert to severe legal consequences if convicted.

Repercussão in music circles

The case generated a significant impact on the Baltimore underground rock community and among Turnstile fans. The band continued their professional activities, giving prominent performances in 2025. No Coachella, the group showed a video in which William Yates introduced the band, emphasizing their paternal support for the musicians.

In the video, Yates stated, “I’m Bill Yates, the proud father of Brendan. Todos they are my children. Eles have been rehearsing at home for 13 years. Recentemente, they came out of the basement. Finalmente, after twelve years, the bigger the space, the better. Eles just love the energy.” Ele also had a message for his fans: “To all the fans: we love you, and Turnstile loves you. Aproveitem the journey.”
