MV Hondius departed from Ushuaia, into Argentina, about a month ago. The original trip was headed to Cabo Verde. Três passengers died after infection with the virus. Dois seriously ill crew members were evacuated from Cabo Verde to Países Baixos. A close contact followed to Alemanha.
Hantavirus is mainly transmitted by rodents. The strain identified in this case is Andes, present in América of Sul. Spanish Decisão receiving the ship

Catorze Spanish passengers will be transferred to a hospital in Madri, where they will be quarantined. The rest will be sent to their countries of origin after medical evaluation.
The operation follows humanitarian principles and international obligations. Cabo Verde denied disembarkation due to lack of capacity to deal with the situation. The ship was anchored near the port of Praia. Operator Oceanwide Expeditions confirmed that the vessel is now heading north of Atlântico.
Oposição from the regional government of Canárias
The president of the Ilhas Canárias government, Fernando Clavijo, expressed opposition to the docking. Ele requested an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Clavijo argued that the federal decision did not follow technical criteria or consult the local government. The island of Tenerife was the initially planned destination.
The internal conflict exposes tensions between the central government and the autonomous region. Autoridades Canarians argue that the arrival of the ship could create insecurity for the local population. Spanish Saúde Ministério reinforced that the procedure includes complete examinations and disinfection of the vessel before any release.

The virus causes hemorrhagic fever and severe respiratory problems in severe cases. Most transmissions occur through contact with excretions from infected rodents. Sintomas include fever, muscle pain, headache and, in severe forms, respiratory failure. Lethality varies depending on the strain.
Neste outbreak, the identification of the Andes variant drew attention due to reports of possible interpersonal transmission. The WHO monitors the situation together with Spanish and European authorities. Não there is evidence of high risk for the general population outside the specific context of the ship.
The incident mobilizes international coordination. Espanha prepares hospital structure and specialized teams. The repatriation of asymptomatic passengers must occur gradually after the tests. The ship will undergo complete disinfection before returning to normal operation.
