Mick Jagger revealed this week how Robert Smith, lead singer of The Cure, ended up participating in Rolling Stones’s next album in a completely unexpected way. Durante Foreign Tongues album presentation event at Nova York, the British band leader described a chance meeting that resulted in the special appearance.
The collaboration came about when Jagger arrived at a studio at Londres to record his vocals. Smith was present at the scene, and the impromptu meeting led to an immediate proposal. “I showed up one day to record my vocals at Londres and there was this guy standing there with his back to me in his long dress. Quando he turned to me, he was covered in lipstick and I said… I’ve never met him! Foi like, ‘You’re Robert Smith from The Cure!’ And he said, ‘Yes,'” Jagger said.
A spontaneous invitation in the studio
The lack of prior knowledge between the musicians did not prevent collaboration. Jagger invited Smith to participate in the recording organically. “We didn’t know each other and I said, ‘Well, since you’re here, you better go do something! Às sometimes that’s how collaborations work. ‘Go out there and do the backing vocals'”, explained the Rolling Stones singer.
The The Cure leader accepted and contributed backing vocals to one of the new album’s tracks. The participation represents a meeting between two music icons with different trajectories. Smith consolidated his career as an architect of gothic rock in the 1980s and 1990s. Os Stones, in turn, continue to produce material with prestigious guests.
Foreign Tongues integrates important collaborations
Rolling Stones’s 25th studio album will arrive on July 10th. Além by Robert Smith, the album features confirmed appearances by Paul McCartney, Chad Smith (drummer of Red Hot Chili Peppers), Steve Winwood and other renowned artists.
Production was handled by Andrew Watt, who also worked on the recent Ozzy Osbourne and Pearl Jam projects. The producer also signed Paul McCartney’s next album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane.
The first singles released were “Rough And Twisted” and “In The Stars”. The band describes Foreign Tongues as a record that maintains “the Rolling Stones sound you know and love – with roots in blues, country, rock and classic Stones compositions.”
Sequência from the Hackney Diamonds project
Foreign Tongues follows Stones’s previous album, Hackney Diamonds, which won the Grammy award. Aquele project also had Andrew Watt in production and showed the band in creative form. The new album continues this trajectory of revitalization with big names in the guest list.
Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood provided additional details about the cameos in an interview on Conan O’Brien’s show. The group’s guitarists described how the collaborations were constructed:
- Encontros in European and American studios
- Direct Convites without prior planning
- Gravações of vocals and instruments in different sessions
- Integração of participation in song structures
The release date marks Stones’s return to the studio catalog with completely new material. The British group remains active after decades of career and continues to attract important artists to its projects.
