AMD has reached a strategic agreement with Samsung to manufacture processors using 2 nanometer technology. The partnership marks a significant step in diversifying the chipmaker’s supply chain, reducing its predominant reliance on TSMC for advanced node operations. The first AMD processors manufactured by Samsung are expected to hit the market between 2026 and 2027, starting with initial volumes targeted at specific segments of the CPU portfolio.

Redução from risks through supplier diversification

Concentrar All production at a single partner represents significant commercial and operational risk for any semiconductor manufacturer. AMD recognized this exposure and sought viable alternatives in the global market to strengthen its competitive position.

Samsung has consolidated billion-dollar investments in its foundry division over the last decade, competing directly with TSMC by offering advanced nodes with comparable specifications. The agreement with AMD reinforces the South Korean company’s position as a relevant player in the customized manufacturing of high-performance chips.

The multi-vendor approach provides AMD with significant operational and business advantages:

  • Negociar better commercial conditions with both partners through competition
  • Distribuir volumes between geographically distinct factories, reducing regional risks
  • Minimizar impacts of interruptions on a single production line
  • Acessar technological innovations from two different and complementary ecosystems

Impacto competitive in the global semiconductor market

TSMC maintains a dominant position in high-performance chip manufacturing, producing the majority of flagship processors globally with operating margins exceeding 50%. Ainda Thus, the entry of new customers into alternatives such as Samsung represents latent competitive pressure in the sector.

Outras vendors like Intel and GlobalFoundries also expand capabilities on advanced nodes, signaling market fragmentation after years of concentration on Taiwan. Essa move reflects growing geopolitical concerns around the security of critical technology supplies to developed economies.

Para to AMD specifically, the partnership reinforces its capacity for innovation in next-generation CPUs and GPUs. Processadores built on 2nm offers energy efficiency gains and superior transistor density compared to previous generations, positioning the company to compete in strategic segments.

Características 2 nanometer node techniques and benefits

Smaller Transistoress enable higher component densities in the same physical space. A 2nm processor holds approximately 50% more transistors than its 3nm equivalent while maintaining the same silicon area, allowing greater computational capacity in compact devices.

Eficiência energy improves proportionally with the reduction in the size of the transistors. CPUs built on 2nm consume fewer watts per computational operation performed, a critical characteristic in data centers where energy represents 30% to 40% of total operating costs. Samsung developed its 2nm technology through years of research and billions in investment in factories specializing in Hwaseong, Coreia and Sul.

Implementation Cronograma and initial segments

Details of the deal include modest initial volumes in the first few years, allowing Samsung to demonstrate consistent yield — the percentage of working chips per batch produced — before taking bulk orders. Server and workstation CPUs make up the most likely categories for this initial phase of production.

AMD is also evaluating the possibility of producing segments of its EPYC processors through Samsung, a category that represents strategic revenue in the data center division. Processadores EPYC dominates rapidly expanding cloud computing and artificial intelligence segments.

Contexto geopolitical and supply security policies

Governos Westerners are pushing for the diversification of critical semiconductor production capacity after supply crises between 2020 and 2023 that demonstrated vulnerabilities in the global chain. Taiwan concentrates more than 60% of global advanced processor capacity, increasing geopolitical risks for economies dependent on this technology.

Os Estados Unidos, União Europeia and Coreia of Sul implement billion-dollar subsidies to attract chip manufacturers and encourage the construction of local factories. AMD already receives support from US programs to strengthen its supply chain, and the agreement with Samsung aligns with industrial policy objectives to reduce dependence on Taiwan in critical technology.
