Valve releases 3D designs of the new Steam Controller for community customization
Valve has made the CAD files of the new Steam Controller and Puck available in the SteamHardware/SteamController repository via the gitlab.steamos.cloud platform. The models were released under the Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0 license, allowing creators and 3D printer enthusiasts to modify and design custom accessories. The announcement arrived just days after the controller’s official launch on May 4.

Files include 3D models in STP and STL formats, as well as detailed technical drawings with design features. The distribution covers the external and surface topology of the devices, offering enough information to design grips, cases, brackets and additional accessories without allowing replication of the internal electronics.

Esta approach marks a return to the strategy Valve adopted with the original Steam Controller from 2015, when it also made technical documentation available to the public. The decision reinforces the company’s commitment to fostering the community of independent creators and users passionate about custom hardware.
Especificações new controller techniques
The Steam Controller features two analog joysticks with TMR technology (Tunnel Magnetic Resistance), two square 34.5mm trackpads, and four assignable grip buttons. The haptic is made up of four LRA units: two for the trackpads and two high-power ones for the grips. The device measures 111 x 159 x 57 mm and weighs 292 grams, with an 8.39 Wh lithium-ion battery that offers more than 35 hours of autonomy. Connection can be made via Puck, Bluetooth or wired USB-C.
The Puck works as a wireless transmitter and magnetic charging station, supporting up to four controllers simultaneously. Mede 50 x 28 x 9 mm and weighs just 16 grams.

Restrições commercials and terms of use
The CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license states that any modification or derivative creation must be attributed to Valve, cannot be commercialized directly and must be shared under the same terms. Individual Criadores may manufacture accessories and share them with the community, but the commercial production and sale of peripheral products requires specific copyright checks and potential additional authorizations from Valve.

Nos Estados Unidos, the new Steam Controller retails for US$99. Na Europa, costs €99, while Reino Unido is priced at £85. No Japão, KOMODO STATION sells the product for 17,800 yen including taxes. The official launch took place on May 4th at Pacífico time, corresponding to May 5th at Japão time. Proprietários 3D printers and designers are already beginning to explore the customization possibilities offered by the files made available.
