Nintendo confirmed in a question and answer session after the launch of Switch 2 that the new console was not developed as a direct competitor to equipment focused on raw performance. Takuhiro Dohta, from the Planejamento and Desenvolvimento department of Entretenimento, reiterated that the priority was to create an accessible experience for as many players as possible, ruling out any positioning in the high-performance hardware segment.

The Japanese manufacturer’s statement reflects a consolidated strategy since the original console. The company has historically not competed for supremacy in processing speed or graphics capabilities, focusing on gameplay innovation and competitive pricing.

Nintendo rejects competition for raw power

Director Dohta was explicit in his statement during the presentation event. “Our goal was to create an experience that could be enjoyed by as many players as possible, rather than an experience exclusive to those who prefer powerful hardware,” he said. The stance reinforces the corporate philosophy of making the Nintendo consoles accessible to different age groups and audiences.

The positioning contrasts sharply with the strategy of rivals in the market. PlayStation 5 Slim costs almost 500 euros, Xbox Series X reaches 550 euros, and PlayStation 5 Pro exceeds 800 euros. Computadores for gaming can easily reach four-digit costs. The Switch 2, in comparison, retails for approximately 430 euros in the standard version.

Concorrentes portables like Steam Deck from Valve, ROG Ally Price works as a decisive factor in increasing accessibility, according to the company’s own analysis.

Especificações new console techniques

The Switch 2 represents a significant update compared to the original model. The 7-inch LCD screen offers Full HD resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate. In television-coupled mode, the console displays 4K images with 120Hz output and HDR support.

Dois packages are available on the market:

  • Standard Versão: 430 euros (console without games)
  • Pacote with Mario Kart World: 480 euros

The console uses upscaling in certain titles to maintain adequate frame rates during 4K operation. Todos The original Switch games are compatible with the new hardware.

Denominação carefully avoids false expectations

Kouichi Kawamoto, also from the planning and development department, participated in the same clarification session and discussed the name choice. The company considered alternatives such as “Super Nintendo Switch” before settling on the final nomenclature. The decision reflected historical analysis of previous products.

“Super NES, released after NES, was not compatible with NES games. Como or Switch 2 is compatible with Switch games, it didn’t seem right to use the same nomenclature as the Super NES”, explained Kawamoto. Regressive compatibility was a determining criterion to avoid any suggestion of generational rupture.

Kawamoto emphasized that the focus should not be on technical specifications or comparative labels. “Switch 2 is a new system with improved performance, but we want players who purchase it to focus not on the technical specifications, but on the latest system developed by Nintendo,” he added.

Official Lançamento and availability

The console was launched on June 5, 2025. Distribution follows a dual presentation strategy, offering both the option of an isolated console and bundled packages with titles. Mario Kart World appears as the first game offered in a promotional kit to consumers since its official launch.

Backward compatibility remains a strategic differentiator. Proprietários from original Switch can migrate your existing library to new hardware without functional losses, ensuring continuity of the gaming ecosystem established since 2017.

Analistas point out that the explicit refusal to compete on specifications reflects Nintendo’s confidence in its business model centered on unique software and innovative gameplay experiences. The company maintains a history of commercial success despite hardware that is often inferior to that of direct competitors.
