A survey of 1,086 Garmin watch users carried out on Reddit reveals a clear preference for MiP technology over the latest models with AMOLED. Of the participants, 537 stated that they would buy old models with MiP or change brands if Garmin completely abandoned reflective technology. Apenas 511 respondents would accept migrating to AMOLED, while 38 would opt for the Instinct Crossover, which combines elements of both types of display. The numbers indicate significant resistance among the user base to the ongoing technological transition.

Divisão clear between display preferences

The survey was conducted in communities dedicated to Garmin watches, where the debate about screen technologies is constant. Usuários who choose MiP often cite practical advantages in outdoor activities, especially in environments with intense sunlight. The reflective screen allows direct reading under strong sunlight without the need to increase artificial brightness, a feature valued by runners, cyclists and hikers.

Garmin has expanded the range of models with AMOLED in its most recent lines. The Fenix 8 still maintains dual options in certain sizes, but versions such as the Fenix 8 Pro and Forerunner 970 are now offered exclusively with AMOLED. Essa trend worries segments of the community that prioritize battery life above visual features such as vibrant colors and higher resolution.

Battery Autonomia as a deciding factor

The Memory in Pixel display maintains constant visibility without aggressively draining the battery. 47mm Um Fenix 8 with AMOLED and active always-on offers autonomy of approximately seven days. The same version with MiP achieves up to 21 days of continuous operation. With integrated solar cells, the useful life can reach 28 days in favorable weather conditions, a significant difference for athletes who carry out long-term activities.

Usuários report that outdoor readability compensates for MiP’s lower resolution. AMOLED needs brightness above 3,000 nits to compete with direct sunlight, which consumes more energy even at moderate settings. Muitos athletes prefer not to have to lift their wrist or touch the screen repeatedly to check basic information such as time and training metrics.

Estratégia transition and affected models

The Garmin has progressively expanded the use of AMOLED in lines aimed at daily use and viewing color maps. The Forerunner 955 was still offered with MiP, but its successor, the 970, exclusively adopted the more modern screen. The Fenix 8 maintained dual options in some sizes, while the Pro version was restricted to AMOLED or Micro-LED. Official Fóruns and online communities record intense debates about this technological transition.

Proprietários from older Fenix models advocates retaining reflective technology for users who engage in long runs, hikes in mountainous environments, or cycle in sunny regions. Outros highlight the superior visual quality of AMOLED for detailed graphics, notifications and interactive maps. The split reflects different priorities within the user community.

Impacto on brand loyalty

The survey indicates that approximately one-third of respondents would consider leaving Garmin if the switch to AMOLED becomes total and irreversible. Muitos users switch between models or actively seek out stock from previous versions with MiP. Essa trend suggests that the brand may face retention challenges if it does not maintain reflective display options in specific segments of the portfolio.

Quem prioritizes battery life and tends to maintain conservative settings on AMOLED watches, disabling features such as always-on and activation gestures. MiP enables true always-on without significant impact on lifetime, offering a fundamentally different user experience. Garmin has not officially commented on the research, but current models continue to be available with both technologies in different lines and price ranges.
