When does the 2026 World Cup start? Check opening dates, games and final

Copa of Mundo 2026 opens its doors on June 11th. The tournament takes place on Estados Unidos, Canadá and México for the first time with 48 teams in the format. The grand final takes place on July 19, ending the biggest event in world football.

The schedule establishes a journey of just over a month between the first and last game. Confira the dates of each phase:

Novo format with 48 selections

Este will be the first world championship with expansion to 48 teams. The previous format had 32 teams divided into eight groups of four. Agora the tournament will have 16 groups with three teams each, increasing the number of matches and offering more opportunities to confederations.

The structural change expands access to the tournament. Mais countries get a place directly or through regional qualifiers. Fifa justifies the expansion as a means of democratizing competition and generating more revenue from box office and broadcasting rights.

Brazilian Seleção confirmed

Brasil already has its participation guaranteed among the 48 teams. The confirmation came after the results of the South American qualifiers. The coach and squad will still be defined according to the official Confederação Brasileira and Futebol calendar.

The three host countries share the headquarters between their territories. Os Estados Unidos hosts the largest number of host cities due to the stadium structure. Canadá and México contribute their main urban centers to host the matches.
