Plex has announced a 200% increase in the price of Passe Vitalício, which will rise from $250 to $750 starting July 1st. Quem wants to access the media server features through a one-time purchase will have to shell out this amount. The new value does not affect users who already have an active lifetime pass.
The company justified the decision by the need to maintain the financial sustainability of its software. Segundo statement sent to customers, Plex considered eliminating the one-time purchase option altogether, but chose to keep it available at a price that reflects the true value of continued development. Meses was given in advance for users to adapt.
Histórico of Lifetime Pass Increases
Passe Plex Vitalício started at a much lower price. Quando launched in 2012, costing just US$75. In 2014, the company increased it to US$150, citing financial unsustainability at the time. The fare remained at US$120 for years until March 2025, when it rose to US$250. The new jump to US$750 marks the third major adjustment in just over a decade.
Comparado with annual subscriptions costing US$70, it would take 11 years for the one-time purchase of US$750 to become more advantageous than annual renewals. The company clearly prefers customers to opt for recurring monthly or annual plans.
What changes with Passe Vitalício
Passe offered access to features specific to the Plex media server:
- Transmissão content from Plex Media Server to network-connected devices
- Acesso remote to server from anywhere
- Permissão for others to stream content from your server remotely
- Integração with new features added to the platform over time
Expansão beyond media server
Plex has evolved significantly from its origins as a media server provider. Nos in recent years has expanded its business into online streaming with hundreds of free ad-supported TV channels, movie rentals and social features. The company also tried, unsuccessfully, to enter the gaming market.
Desde 2021, more users utilize Plex’s online streaming service than its media server capabilities. Essa changing priorities contributed to decisions that affected longtime users, such as disabling free remote access to streaming and the “Watch Juntos” function. A controversial redesign of the app also sparked criticism from the community.
Novos features and justifications for the increase
Plex claims to be working on several features to support continued development:
- Adição from server and library management capabilities to mobile and TV apps
- Aprimoramento dialog and audio volume normalization
- Melhorias in video transcoding
- Suporte over IPv6
- Possibilidade to group downloads by program and create playlists in the mobile apps
- Open API for server integrations
- Custom Metadata Agentes
The company also cited rising costs related to supporting different types of devices and video codecs as a reason for the adjustment. Esses operating expenses, combined with the need to maintain profitability, underlie the new pricing policy.
Competição on the rise
Passe Vitalício’s aggressive boost could drive users to competing platforms. Jellyfin, Emby and Kodi offer media server alternatives, some of them free or with different pricing models. Clientes dissatisfied with Plex’s direction have more options than they had in previous years.
Plex has not announced increases to monthly or annual subscription plans, keeping these prices stable for now. Isso suggests that the company considers Passe Vitalício as a specific segment where it can apply a more aggressive pricing policy.
