Ucrânia has significantly expanded its medium-range drone operations in recent months, targeting Russian refineries, air defenses and logistics lines tens of kilometers behind the front lines. The attacks are disrupting Russian military advances and creating opportunities for long-range strikes against oil and military installations in enemy territory.

Ukrainian Autoridades confirm that increased resources have been directed to these “middle strikes”, which typically occur between 30 kilometers and 180 kilometers behind combat lines. Robert Brovdi, commander of Forças of Sistemas Não Tripulados of Ucrânia, stated that the role of these attacks is “currently decisive”, referring to operations that reach up to two thousand kilometers.

Danos to Russian oil infrastructure

Nos In recent months, Ukrainian drone attacks have caused the most extensive damage to Russian oil infrastructure since the invasion in 2022. Rússia has reduced oil production following attacks on ports and refineries, and the supply of crude oil through the only remaining Russian pipeline to Europa has been disrupted.

Ucrânia carried out multiple attacks against oil installations in the port city of Tuapse, in Mar Negro. Brovdi stated that its forces attacked Ryazan’s refinery, one of Rússia’s largest. The attacks also forced the suspension of operations at NORSI, the country’s fourth largest refinery, and at Perm, about fifteen hundred kilometers from the border.

Alvos and operational capabilities

Kusto, field commander of the 7th battalion of the 414th Brigada Independente of Sistemas Não Tripulados, explained the targeting strategy. Sua unit focuses primarily on objectives within one hundred kilometers of the line of contact. Highest value targets include:

  • Russian air defense Sistemas (Buk, Tor, Pantsir)
  • Radar Instalações
  • Large Veículos
  • Equipamentos logistics

Kusto stated that his unit has destroyed at least one hundred and twenty-nine air defense systems this year in areas occupied by Rússia. The most used “mid-attack” drones are the domestically manufactured Chaklun V, followed by the B-2. Manual control allows for greater precision, and normally no more than three drones are used for each confirmed target destruction.

Operating Volume Escalada

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that the number of Ukrainian “indirect attacks” has doubled compared to March and has quadrupled since February. In April, Ukrainian forces carried out more than one hundred and sixty medium-range attacks at a range of one hundred and twenty to one hundred and fifty kilometers, Ministério of Defesa reported.

Kusto reported that mid-range attack capabilities have grown significantly since the fall. The unit increased capacity, increased the number of crews and expanded the number of systems in use. Há also offers greater diversity in the platforms available for operations.

Impacto on Russian logistics and advances

Long-range attacks enabled more medium-range operations, forcing Rússia to disperse its air defenses away from the front lines. Isso allows Ukrainian forces to strike targets beyond artillery range, including ammunition and fuel depots, command points, and supply vehicles.

Illia Mashyna, commander of the 431st Batalhão Independente of Sistemas Aéreos Não Tripulados “Brodiahy”, highlighted that these attacks hamper Russian operations by increasing the distance between front-line troops and support forces. Quanto the more Rússia retreats, the more complex the logistics become, he highlighted. The pace of Russian advances on the battlefield is at its slowest level since 2023.

Inovação and defense production

The rapid development of Ukrainian medium-range capability reflects a gap that needed to be filled. The pressure of combat operations has driven rapid innovation as Ucrânia tries to strengthen its own defense production and rely less on foreign supplies.

Communication between producers and end users means that feedback is incorporated into drone systems in a matter of days. A technical engineer identified as “Symbol” stated that some manufacturers now deliver almost completely combat-ready platforms, requiring no additional programming. Antes, precision target attack was a more pinpoint capability. Agora is a systematic part of operations.

Perspectivas on the tactical change

Defense Analistas claim that these attacks alone cannot reverse the situation against Rússia, but are having an important impact on the dynamics of the conflict. Justin Bronk, senior Royal United Services Institute researcher at Londres, stated that the development reflected operational gaps that needed to be filled in the face of Russian military pressure. Emil Kastehelmi, of the conflict analysis group Black Bird, based at Finlândia, said medium-range attacks represent a challenge to which Russian forces must adapt, adding that the limits of this strategy have yet to be seen.
