The Google has expanded the use of blur and translucency effects in the interface of the Android 17 QPR1 Beta 3. The change affects volume controls, power menu and other visual elements of the system, consolidating a design trend started the previous year with the Material 3 Expressive.

Controle volume slider with new translucent look

The volume selector of the Android 17 QPR1 Beta 3 has a pill-shaped compartment that displays a blurred background. By tapping the bottom icon on the interface, users access the full volume panel, which also adopts the translucency effect. The feature uses Google’s Dynamic Color technology to apply blur consistently.

The new feature offers what Google describes as a “sense of depth”, allowing you to view the home screen or application running behind the control. Essa’s visual approach balances functionality with clarity while maintaining awareness of what is occurring in the background.

Expansão from blurring in menus and patterns

Além of the volume control, the Android 17 QPR1 Beta 3 extends the translucent effect to:

  • Menu accessible power by pressing and holding the power off button
  • Menu of energy available on fast Configurações
  • Superfícies previously solid now with blurred background
  • Seletor of widgets with visual effect enhancement

The progression started in Android 16 QPR1, which added blur to notifications and quick settings. Android 17 Beta 4 focused solely on the widget selector, and now QPR1 Beta 3 generalizes the approach to multiple areas of the interface.

Continuidade do Material 3 Expressive

Material Design Expressive, introduced by Google the previous year, laid the foundation for this visual evolution. The design system emphasizes more fluid movement and smooth transitions that create the illusion of lightness in navigation. Translucent blur complements this philosophy by adding depth to the visual hierarchy.

The design strategy reinforces the separation between interface layers. The user can distinguish that certain elements float over the content, without losing context with what is in the background. Isso reduces the feeling of “heaviness” typical of opaque interfaces.

Tecnologia Dynamic Color behind the effects

Google applies its Dynamic Color technology to standardize blur effects across the interface. Dynamic Color automatically adjusts the color palette according to the device’s wallpaper, ensuring visual cohesion between the translucent blur and the system colors.

Esse intelligent system maintains aesthetic consistency even when users change wallpapers or apply custom themes. The blur adapts to the visual context of the device, rather than displaying a generic translucency.

Impacto in Pixel user experience

The implementation of these effects specifically in the Android 17 QPR1 Beta 3 marks an evolutionary step in the Google interface design. Usuários from Pixel who have already experienced Material 3 Expressive the previous year will recognize the continuity of the visual language.

Feedback from these tests on previous Canary releases informed the current beta’s design decisions. The significant expansion of the blur indicates approval of the concept of translucency as a functional and aesthetic element.
