An international team of researchers has developed a theoretical framework that allows trapped ion atomic clocks to measure quantum superposition of time, a phenomenon in which different temporal flows coexist simultaneously on a quantum scale. The model was created by scientists from Universidade of Kyushu, Instituto of Tecnologia Stevens, Universidade of Waterloo, Instituto Nacional of Padrões and Tecnologia, Universidade Estadual of Colorado and Universidade of Estocolmo. The discovery paves the way to experimentally verify one of the greatest mysteries of modern physics: the interaction between relativity and quantum mechanics.

Até Now, no experiment had confirmed the existence of this “interaction of time” between the two pillars of contemporary physics. The researchers say the next step involves proving the concept in a laboratory setting, potentially revolutionizing our understanding of time and gravity.

Precisão revolutionary in trapped ions

Conventional atomic Relógioss work by monitoring the frequency of certain atoms, achieving unprecedented precision in temporal measurements. The most advanced trapped ion configurations demonstrate such extreme sensitivity that they can detect the time dilation predicted by Albert Einstein at height differences of a few millimeters.

The team proposed a new technique to control the movement of these clocks, indicating improvements in sensitivity to the quantum effect of 100 to 1000 times compared to previous methods. Joshua Foo, associate professor of Instituto of Estudos Avançados of Universidade of Kyushu and one of the study’s lead authors, explained the fundamental mechanism:

  • Movimento of the atomic clock becomes intertwined with its internal energy
  • Entanglement causes the clock to lose detectable quantum properties
  • Modern Técnicas can register these changes with new sensitivity
  • The framework allows you to quantify different simultaneous time flows

Quantum time versus macroscopic time

In the observable world, time flows inexorably in a single direction. Einstein demonstrated that gravity and speed alter the rate of temporal flow, but his theory of relativity assumed that on a macroscopic scale this “arrow of time” remains constant. In the quantum universe, however, reality is radically different. Time can exist in superposition, a state in which multiple temporal flows coexist at the same instant. Essa property remained theoretical, without experimental proof until the development of this structure.

Foo commented on the origin of the research: “We discovered that the movement of the atomic clock becomes entangled with its internal energy. The signature of this entanglement is that the clock itself loses some of its quantum properties, which can be detected using modern techniques.” Understanding this dynamic has opened up unprecedented possibilities for measuring phenomena previously considered inaccessible.

Caminho to explore quantum gravity

Caso experimental tests confirm the viability of the theoretical model, atomic clocks could become research tools for quantum phenomena previously difficult to measure accurately. Isso includes fundamental questions such as the quantum nature of time itself and, potentially, gravity in the quantum regime.

Foo stated that his team is developing a detailed experiment to “bring the theoretical model to reality.” If successful, these efforts will provide fresh perspectives that do not appear in the purely theoretical version. The researcher also expressed interest in using atomic clocks based on the new model to probe quantum gravity, described as “the other fundamental question in physics.”

The framework establishes atomic clocks as viable tools for exploring diverse phenomena in the quantum world. Além further opens a new experimental frontier in fundamental physics and offers a viable path to significantly more accurate next-generation atomic clocks. Practical applications include precision-enhanced GPS and satellite navigation systems, with the potential to reveal hidden aspects of the quantum universe.

Implicações for fundamental physics

The research represents convergence of fields that have historically remained separate. Relatividade and quantum mechanics, the two most successful theoretical frameworks in physics, have never been completely reconciled on an experimental scale. Esta new approach offers a possible path towards this unification, at least in the specific context of temporal measurement.

The researchers note that the ability to measure quantum superposition of time opens “a new experimental frontier in fundamental physics.” Sucesso in this endeavor could provide crucial data on the nature of gravity, a phenomenon that remains mysterious in the quantum regime. Universidades and research institutes in five countries collaborate on this effort, reflecting the importance of the work to the global scientific community.
