The absence of number 9 comes after months in which Suárez had hopes of receiving a new call-up. The good performance of Inter Miami, competing in the MLS alongside Lionel Messi, had intensified the debate among fans about the veteran’s possible presence in the 2026 tournament.

Prioridade in young people and physical intensity

Internamente in the Uruguayan federation, the understanding was clear from the beginning of the cycle under Bielsa’s command. The Argentine coach prioritized younger players and athletes who were better suited to the intense, high-pressing style he implements in his methodology.

The choice reflects profound changes promoted by the coach in the national team’s squad. Intensidade, transition speed and physical renewal became determining criteria in forming the list for Mundial. Suárez, aged 38, does not fit the renewal profile that Bielsa pursues to consolidate the next generation of Uruguayan football.

Histórico of criticism and rapprochement

Nos behind the scenes, the perception persisted that the relationship between Bielsa and Suárez was never completely reconstructed. Nos last few months, both tried to get back together publicly. Ainda thus, the technical evaluation prevailed over any personal considerations within the technical committee.

The striker had admitted to dreaming of a new opportunity in the national team:

  • Participação in four Copas of Mundo (2010, 2014, 2018, 2022)
  • 69 goals in 143 matches for Celeste
  • Campeão from Copa América 2011
  • 29 goals scored by Grêmio in 2023

Encerramento from a historic era

Suárez’s absence marks the symbolic end of one of the most remarkable trajectories in recent history from Uruguai to Mundiais. The veteran was a protagonist in different campaigns for the national team over more than a decade of representing Celeste.

Sua’s recent stint in Brazilian football also consolidated his South American legacy. Durante the 2023 season in Grêmio, Suárez was one of the main highlights of the Grêmio campaign, also demonstrating competitive capacity at a high level even at an advanced stage of his career.

Bielsa’s decision, therefore, does not diminish the legacy accumulated by Suárez with the Uruguayan national team. The attacker’s history remains intact as one of the biggest names to defend Celeste, regardless of his absence in Mundo’s next Copa.
