Calbee changes potato chip packaging to black and white; understand the change
Confectionery giant Calbee announced on the 12th the temporary change in the packaging of its fries. The company will replace the traditional colorful design with black and white versions on Japanese supermarket shelves from May 25. The decision directly responds to the instability in the supply of raw materials caused by the escalation of tensions in the Oriente Médio.
The company justified the measure by stating that it was reviewing procedures “in view of the instability in the acquisition of some raw materials due to the increase in tensions in the Oriente Médio, with the aim of prioritizing the stable supply of products”. The visual transformation will affect 14 different products and will not impact the quality of the fries, as guaranteed by Calbee. The traditional mascot that appears on current packaging will disappear, giving way to a minimalist presentation with just the product name in text.
Affected Produto and implementation timeline
The packaging redesign is confirmed to begin on May 25th, specifically affecting 14 items in the French fries line. The company did not disclose which specific ingredient is missing or causing the need for packaging changes. Secretariado of Gabinete, however, reported that it has not received reports of immediate problems with the supply of printing inks or naphtha to date. Autoridades indicated that they believed that the quantity of inputs required for Japão as a whole was guaranteed at the date of the announcement.

Repercussões global voltages on Oriente Médio
The US and Israel attacks against Irã, which began in late February, prompted the prolonged closure of Estreito from Ormuz. The lockdown has forced companies around the world to reorganize their supply chains and deal with significant disruptions. The impact is not limited to confectioneries or the food sector:
- Agricultores Asians face severe shortage of crop fertilizers
- Índia is unable to export rice to Oriente Médio markets
- Companhias regional airlines cause delays in global consumer cargo deliveries
- Technology and manufacturing Empresas record bottlenecks in international distribution chains
Oriente Médio airlines account for a significant portion of global air cargo transportation. Esse factor amplifies delays in product deliveries to consumers on different continents. The situation highlights how geopolitical crises translate into practical effects on the products that reach the shelves.
Transformação brand visual Calbee
The new black and white packaging marks a visual break with the brand’s previous identity. The mascot that historically wore a hat and characterized the design of French fries will disappear completely. The change is limited to the look, keeping the product formula, flavor and quality intact. The company emphasized that no aspect of the content will be modified during the period of instability in the supply of raw materials.
