BYD presented the Dolphin G DM-i, the first vehicle developed specifically for the European market. The 4,160mm supermini will be the smallest plug-in hybrid available in the Reino Unido when it hits the market in the autumn, with prices starting from under £20,000. The model competes directly with rivals such as Renault Clio, Volkswagen Polo and Toyota Yaris, differentiating itself with its complete plug-in hybrid propulsion system.
Sistema with unprecedented propulsion for the segment
The Dolphin G uses an Super Hybrid system, expected to be similar to that implemented in the Atto 2 DM-i compact SUV. The technology combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine that functions as a generator with an electric motor that drives the front wheels. Esse arrangement allows the vehicle to switch between operating modes, maximizing efficiency in different driving scenarios.
The company will disclose all technical details during the official launch scheduled for June. Enquanto that, BYD confirmed a combined range of more than 1,000 kilometers using both electric and gasoline propulsion.
Posicionamento on the European market
The Dolphin G marks BYD’s strategic entry into the European B segment, categorized as one of the most important areas of the market according to executive vice president Stella Li. The model will likely be produced at the brand’s new Hungria factory, consolidating the Chinese presence on the continent.
BYD’s strategy goes beyond the Dolphin G:
- Primeiro vehicle developed exclusively for Europa
- Planejamento of additional models in segments B and C
- Objetivo to position BYD as a European brand in the coming years
- Production Fábrica leased to Hungria
- Official Lançamento scheduled for June 2026
Diferencial technician against competitors
Enquanto While most European rivals adopt mild hybrid or all-electric systems, the Dolphin G takes a distinct approach. The full plug-in hybrid allows drivers to use the battery exclusively on short urban journeys and rely on the gasoline engine for longer journeys, eliminating the range anxiety common in all-electric vehicles.
The supermini will essentially be a brother to the Dolphin Surf EV, sharing platform and design, but radically differentiating itself in the propulsion system. Essa strategy allows BYD to offer varied options for consumers with different needs in the European market.
Ambições company strategies
Stella Li expressed broad vision for the Dolphin G, describing it as a vehicle capable of “redefining what customers can expect from a compact car in the electric age.” Essa statement reflects BYD’s commitment to establishing itself as a relevant supplier in the European compact car segment, historically dominated by traditional manufacturers.
The autumn 2026 launch marks a critical moment for the Chinese company’s European expansion. The model arrives in a context of growing competition between Asian and European manufacturers in the sustainable mobility segment, where competitive pricing and technological innovation define market acceptance.
