Delegate Edson Henrique Damasceno, responsible for investigating Henry Borel’s death, declared this Tuesday (26) during the 2nd day of the trial that former councilor Jairo Souza Santos Júnior, Jairinho, and Monique Medeiros constructed a “rehearsed farce” to deceive the police about the circumstances of the boy’s death. The couple is on trial for intentional homicide in the child’s death, which occurred in 2021.

“During the course of the investigation, we showed that everything was a rehearsed farce, that the versions presented were lies and that the injuries suffered by the boy were incompatible with any fall from bed. The injuries are very serious,” Damasceno told the court.

Inconsistências in couple versions

The case was initially registered as a suspected domestic accident. Porém, investigative work revealed significant discrepancies in the statements of Monique and Jairinho. Damasceno explained that the injuries found on Henry’s body did not correspond to the report of falling from bed presented by the accused.

The delegate reported an episode that he considers decisive for the investigation: Jairinho tried to prevent Henry’s body from being examined. Segundo Damasceno, the former councilor approached a “senior executive” at the hospital where the child died asking for the death to be certified at the unit, without forwarding it to Instituto Médico Legal.

“He didn’t want the body to be sent to the IML. If the body hadn’t gone to the IML, the lie would continue. If they hadn’t had the prints showing the attacks, the lie would continue”, highlighted the delegate.

Conhecimento from Monique about the attacks

According to Damasceno, Monique Medeiros, Henry’s mother, was aware of the attacks suffered by the boy before his death. Apesar then went to the police station to report that Jairinho had a “wonderful” relationship with the child.

“She knew this and, even so, when the boy died from forceful action, with only her, the boy and Jairo at home, she went to the police station to say that Jairinho had a wonderful relationship with him”, declared Damasceno.

The deputy also mentioned that Henry had previously been taken to a medical facility in Bangu with suspicious injuries. On both occasions, Monique presented similar justifications:

  • Primeira turn: fall from bed
  • Ocasião of death: fall from bed
  • Padrão repeated in the couple’s explanations

Evidências documented aggression

The investigation identified an episode of aggression that occurred on February 12, 2021, revealed by analysis of Monique’s cell phone. Segundo Damasceno, prints of conversations between Monique and Henry’s nanny, Thayná, prove that the boy was taken by Jairinho to a room and locked there.

“These prints showed an extremely serious situation. The domestic worker reported that she saw the boy limping and leaving the room with a pain in his head,” said the delegate.

Damasceno further described Henry’s behavior when he was taken to the room by his stepfather. Segundo the deputy, the child expressed despair during these moments.

Desdobramentos on trial

In the early afternoon of this Tuesday, Sérgio Figueiredo, one of Jairinho’s defense lawyers, informed the court of his withdrawal from the case. The lawyer claimed that he considers it “absurd” that the jury was maintained even after the heart attack of Fabiano Lopes, another member of the former councilor’s defense.

The trial continues with the presentation of testimonies from witnesses and experts involved in the investigation. The court analyzes evidence collected by the police and reports from people who lived with Henry before his death.
