YouTube has begun implementing automatic labels in videos that use artificial intelligence (AI) in a significant way, even if the creator has not made prior disclosure. The initiative aims to provide greater clarity to the public by helping viewers quickly identify content generated or altered by AI.

Esta update responds to a consistent community demand for transparency in the use of generative AI, as communicated by the platform. The measure is implemented at a crucial period of global debate about deepfakes and digital manipulations, especially relevant in contexts such as election campaigns.

Detecção and automatic labeling

The platform has started automatically applying warnings to videos where “significant photorealistic use” of AI is detected. Este system works to ensure viewers are aware when content appears real but has been modified or created by artificial intelligence.

YouTube reiterated in a blog post that the community values transparency when it comes to generative AI content. Essa perception is fundamental to trust in the platform and the way users interact with the material they consume daily.

Caso a creator does not specify the use of AI, and the company’s systems detect considerable photorealistic use, the label will be automatically applied. Esta proactive approach seeks to cover gaps where self-declaration may not occur, reinforcing the visibility of information to the public.

Critérios for permanent warnings and positioning

Criadores content will have the ability to dispute AI tags automatically made by YouTube. Contudo, the platform has established that some types of notices will remain fixed and unchangeable, regardless of dispute.

Esses permanent labels will be applied to content generated with proprietary YouTube tools such as Veo and Dream Screen, or to videos that contain C2PA metadata. C2PA is a consortium that developed an “invisible digital stamp”, indicating the total generation of content by artificial intelligence.

The placement of AI labels will vary depending on the video format to ensure maximum visibility. Essa differentiation seeks to adapt the display of the warning to the consumption experience of each type of material:

  • Vídeos long:The warning will be located just below the player and above the video description.
  • Shorts:The label will be displayed as an overlay directly on the image, integrating with the quick format.
  • Conteúdos unrealistic, animated or slightly altered:Para In these cases, the warning is restricted only to the expanded description of the video, differentiating them from what is considered photorealistic.

Platform Objetivos and impact on user experience

Rene Ritchie, head of editorial at YouTube, summarized the main objective of the initiative in a video on the topic. Segundo itself, the idea is to provide “context at a glance,” ensuring viewers immediately know whether something that looks real was actually created with AI.

The platform clarified that the introduction of these AI labels will not impact video recommendation systems or monetization for creators. The focus is strictly on transparency and providing clear information to users without changing the dynamics of reach or earnings.

YouTube makes an important distinction between what it classifies as photorealistic or “significantly” AI-altered content and other types of generated materials. Conteúdos considered unrealistic, animated or slightly modified will receive a less prominent flag, maintaining the focus of the automatic label in cases of greater potential for visual deception.

Transparência on the global deepfake scene

Esta YouTube policy update comes at a time of growing global pressure for greater transparency. Concern intensifies especially in relation to deepfakes and other forms of digital manipulation.

The issue of content manipulation by AI gains particular importance in Brasil in an election year. The ability to discern truthful information from artificially generated content becomes a challenge for the electorate, and digital platforms are under pressure to act.

The changes implemented were designed to balance the need for transparency with the control that content creators have over their productions. YouTube thus seeks to establish a standard that protects viewers without inhibiting innovation or creative freedom.
