Onda Coreana expands its cultural influence across the world, encompassing fashion, beauty, K-dramas and, most prominently, music. Esse global phenomenon propels Sul’s Coreia into the spotlight, solidifying its position as a trend exporter.

Dentro of this expanding landscape, K-pop dominates South Korean music, accounting for approximately half of all streams in the market by 2025. Contudo, the genre demonstrates a significant dependence on foreign listeners, who generate almost 75% of its global streams, a crucial aspect for its sustenance.

Concentração in K-pop raises debate about sustainability

A striking feature of K-pop is its disproportionate concentration of success in a few stars, which raises questions about its long-term sustainability. Dados of Luminate reveals that just 48 artists were responsible for a staggering 39%, or 50 billion, of K-pop’s international streams in 2025. Isso indicates that a considerable portion of the genre’s growth is tied to a very limited number of artists.

Growth’s reliance on its biggest stars is a pattern that distinguishes K-pop from other popular genres. When comparing this structure with that of American R&B/Hip-Hop, for example, it is noted that, last year, 112 artists were responsible for 36% of international streams, showing a more equitable audience distribution. K-pop’s audience is therefore less distributed than that of other relevant global genres.

Diversidade from other Korean music styles offers alternatives

Diante from the high concentration of hits in K-pop, Coreia from Sul needs to expand its gaze beyond the genre in order to foster the next generation of artistic talent. Isso becomes crucial to catalyzing future growth and protecting the country’s vast cultural influence on the global stage. The bell-shaped curve, when comparing K-pop to other Korean recordings, illustrates how its foreign audience is not as driven by the biggest hits in other categories.

Estilos varieties of Korean music, such as rock and rap, are supported, to a greater extent, by an intermediate group of artists. Streaming of these genres is driven by a middle class, or “core,” of recordings and artists who accumulate between 100,000 and 99 million streams annually. In contrast, core K-pop spans a much higher range, from 1 million to 999 million annual streams, reinforcing the distinction in distribution.

Essa comparison between major genres reveals that other styles of Korean music are inherently more diverse. Eles encompass 36% more artists, making them less susceptible to disruptions or crises caused by adverse events involving a single artist or group.

The advantages of diversification for the Korean music industry include:

  • Maior artist diversity: Outros genres encompass 36% more artists than K-pop.
  • Menor susceptibility to disruption: Dependência reduced from a single artist.
  • Top Profit Margem: Diverse Gêneros Enjoy Higher Return on Premium Streaming.
  • Maior audience engagement: Ouvintes demonstrate willingness to invest more.
  • Custo optimized listener acquisition: Permite a more efficient market strategy.

K-pop’s Economia faces risks with high concentration of hits

Musical consolidation in K-pop does not occur by chance, being the result of a vertically integrated business model. Esse model is designed to produce the few megahits needed to sustain your intense talent development, production and marketing activities, which require a high capital investment. However, with such a small number of artists at the top, K-pop’s economy becomes vulnerable.

Essa vulnerability is evident in situations such as contractual disputes with artists or hiatuses in their careers, which can generate significant impacts on the revenue and stability of the genre. Heavy dependence on a few superstars, as the global phenomenon of BTS and BLACKPINK illustrates, exposes the system to greater risks.

Iniciativas to strengthen Sul’s Coreia’s musical future

The disparity in the distribution of streams and profits represents a strategic opportunity for entertainment companies and policymakers in Coreia from Sul. Eles can capitalize on the higher profit margins offered by other musical styles through targeted investments in the country’s domestic market. Isso means looking beyond K-pop to a broader music ecosystem.

Entre’s crucial actions are investing in a social safety net for cultural entrepreneurs, who are the creative force behind music and form the middle class of the Korean music economy. Fortalecer this base guarantees a more robust and diverse artistic production. Apesar of the attractive characteristics of other Korean music styles, the number of international streams was 16 billion in 2025, insignificant when compared to K-pop’s 129 billion in the same period. The analysis used Luminate’s genre classification, including categories not found in the Billboard charts.
