NASA has officially declared the MAVEN probe inoperative. The spacecraft has been orbiting Marte since 2014 and lost contact in December last year. The agency confirmed the end of the mission this Wednesday, June 3, 2026. Equipes tried to reestablish communication for months without success.

The last transmission received by Rede from Espaço Profundo occurred on December 6th. The probe passed behind Marte and did not reappear with a normal signal. Dados partials indicated that it went into safe mode and was spinning wildly. Isso caused loss of solar power.

Investigação points out failure after passing behind Marte

The MAVEN probe operated normally before entering Marte’s shadow zone. Upon exiting the other side, telemetry showed serious problems. NASA’s review committee concluded that recovery was no longer viable.

  • Tentativas command sent by Deep Space Network failed repeatedly
  • Data Fragment Análise Confirmed Unexpected Rotation
  • Security activated Modo prevented correct alignment of solar panels
  • Investigação on the exact cause of the incident remains ongoing

Técnicos worked with limited data during the solar conjunction period. The natural pause in communication complicated initial efforts. Mesmo after the window, the signals sent received no response.

Lançamento and record mission extension

MAVEN took off in November 2013 aboard an Atlas V rocket. Ela reached Martian orbit ten months later. The main mission envisaged only one Earth year of operations. The agency extended the work for more than a decade due to consistent results.

The spacecraft fulfilled its objective of studying the evolution of the Martian atmosphere. Instrumentos measured the interaction with the solar wind over the years. The data helped understand how Marte lost much of its ancient atmosphere.

Scientific Contribuições remains available

Records collected by MAVEN remain accessible to researchers. NASA’s Divisão director of Ciências Planetárias highlighted the lasting value of the information. The probe was a pioneer in the detailed study of the upper layer of the atmosphere.

Cientistas have published hundreds of articles based on these measurements. MAVEN also acted as a data relay for rovers on the surface. Esse role has expanded the ability to communicate with vehicles such as Perseverance and Curiosity.

Outras probes maintain NASA presence at Marte

With the end of MAVEN, there remain two of the agency’s orbiters in operation. Mars Odyssey, launched in 2001, and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, from 2005, are still active. Ambas also far exceeded their original lifespan expectations.

  • Mars Odyssey continues to map the planet since the beginning of the century
  • Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter provides high resolution images
  • The two probes still support communications with surface explorers
  • NASA evaluates future plans for new generation of orbital missions

The loss of MAVEN marks the end of an important phase of exploration. The agency plans to maintain the data archive for future reference. A press conference broadcast this afternoon detailed the next steps.

Legado mission technician

The probe was the first dedicated exclusively to studying the atmosphere and its interaction with the solar wind. Instrumentos on board recorded solar storms and gas escape events. Essas observations contributed to models about Marte’s ancient climate.

Engenheiros from NASA and commercial partners followed the operation for more than 11 years. The repeated extension of the mission demonstrated the robustness of the original design. Mesmo operational purpose, scientific impact remains.

The Mars Express probe, Agência Espacial Europeia, and Trace Gas Orbiter also remain active. The set of orbiters guarantees continuity in Planeta Vermelho observations. NASA is expected to release more details about MAVEN’s full legacy in the coming weeks.
